A MODERATE earthquake was felt across England early today, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The 4.7-magnitude quake was centred at Kingston upon Hull, 205km north of London, according to the US Geological Survey.

Reports from the BBC and Sky News television carried witness statements saying that the tremors were felt about 1am (12pm AEDT), and lasted for between 10 and 15 seconds.

"We have no reports of injuries," a police spokesman in London said.

Many people reported being woken up by the quake and the tremors could be felt in high-rise buildings in London.

A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance Service said that she felt "the tremors here in our control room".

Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, covering parts of northwest England, said they had received reports of tremors, but had no reports of any injuries.

An AFP correspondent in Ealing, west London, said that his apartment building "shook for 10-15 seconds. The whole sofa was shaking."
