i have a dell inspiron 8600 laptop and a desktop and i'm using adsl internet connection (bsnl dataone) connected to the ethernet port of my desktop. i want to basically share this internet connection through the laptop. the laptop has 802.11b wlan and if necessary i can buy a wireless network card for my desktop. please suggest some ways to do this. please tell me if the same can be done by using cables. any suggestions are welcome.

The above can be done using cables provided you have the following:

The desktop should have 2 ethernet ports. One for connecting to ADSL and the other for connecting to the Laptop.

The laptop should have an Ethernet port

One cat-45 cross-cable.

If these persist then it is possible to connect up the systems.

The wireless scneario is slightly different. Apart from both the systems being wireless capable you would need a wireless router. This will be the broadcasting point and the desktop and the laptop will be the receivers. This is the only way to do it.

Basic logic. U need two network card.

1st to connect ur comp to internet connection.
2nd to connect it to ur laptop. And make sure u have cross-crimping in ur cat-45 cable. cos this is something very imp to be taken care of when uconnect a pc to anotherr pc.

Anyways setting up the networking will be a fun. Have to work for it. :)

I think u can get a wifi adapter 802.11g (G-Series) which has 54 mbps. My MB has onboard wifi and my dad's lap is connected to net through my PC.
or else there is another option which will set u back by another 3000 rupees

1.Get a wifi router specially for Internet
2.Get a wifi adpater for ur pc

Now u can connect both ur pc and lap to wifi router no need for ur pc to stay on for ur lap to connect to net. By this way you can avoid proxy servers also.
