Guys,

I have loads of HD ripped (.mkv) movies on Hard disc. Im about to burn them to DVD9. But I want to make sure that they will also play on both X360 and PS3.

I right now own neither of consoles but in future I will buy them and so this is kind of future arrangement.

So I just want to know-

1) which is the video format playable on both consoles ?
2) use which software to convert ? (free is preferred)
3) obviously want to maintain 5.1 audio and video quality of original downloaded file.

Thanks already. :)

1> *.mp4 will do for both
2> XviD4PSP wud be the best "free" option. It has in-built profiles for ps3 & Xbox so you dont have to go thru much trouble. ;-)

Still there are step by step to manually demux (extract) the video & audio from *.mkv and mux to *.mp4. The "Video" will be untouched but the "audio" must be re-encoded to "AAC" from "AC3". A little problem here is, the "Encoder/Format Profile" (Settings) used by the encoder "here" most certainly will not be compatible with PS3 or XBOX. :-(

To add, there are encoders who do XBOX/PS3 compatible > HD/BD Rips, U shud look around a little bit ;-)

3> XBOX only supports 2 Channels :-(

AC3 = Dolby Digital it can be 5.1 or 2 Channels. MP4 does supports only AAC ;-)

Ok, the codec used to encode(compress) this video from a HD is x264. There are pre-defined/default settings (Format Profile) on how to do it, now thats application-varied.

Mostly HD/BD-Rips uses "Format Profile" > High Profile. This ranges from High Profile 1 to High Profile 5.1 as of now. PS3/XBOX can take upto High Profile 4.1.
Then again, these default settings can be changed as the "encoder" wish. This may cause compatible issue with these consoles as they are set-up for default specs.

You can get "MediaInfo" (Link -PM'ed) to know all Video/Audio Specs. Also, I was told rather than converting to "mp4" it can be "M2TS" (Video extension for BD) (Guides - PM'ed). And also PM'ed links to encoders > console-compatible BD/HD/DVD Rips
