I find that newer mobos have 2X4 ATX socket for CPU power.
My exisitng PSU only has 2X2 plug.
Does the system power up if only 2X2 is plugged into the 2X4 socket.

yes you can plug in a 4pin plug into 8 pin CPU power . But if you want to overclock then you might face some problem.
BTW which PSU , CPU & Mobo you're using ?

Mobo CPU - Planning to upgrade, Older PC is based on athlon socket A.
so while exploring the new mobos like AM3 & AM3+ sockets came across this type of 2x4 CPU power socket. As such I won't be overclocing.
