I have got a Seagate 500GB Sata in Dec2008, now just 3months into it.. and its already crashing again and again. (Model: ST3500320AS, Firmware: SD15)
I have installed windows almost 3 times since then, it crash on copying anything or copying from it. After great pain I am able to extract some of my valuable data by connecting my other pc's 160GB drive. When It crash again and again when taking backup also, it just stops, and when I switchoff and on again then it comes back. can you tell what is wrong with it,

I have search on seagate forums and found many people are facing this issue. so will I get a new harddisk or again a refurbished one/

This is a very common issue now..lots of Seagate's 500 GB and 1TB HDD's are going bad and right now they have come out with a newer series.Google around and u'll find lots of
such cases. You were lucky not to lose data.
Check if your drive is in the affected list from the seagate website.Do an RMA at your nearest centre and you should get a new drive as replacement

Yes I am also facing the same issue on my HDD of 250 GB. I think now Seagate is only producing volumes and concerned about quality. Its hightime lets switch to Western Digital or Hitachi
