adsl modem connectivity issues

I'm using BSNL broadband. My modem is 'ar800v'. I presume that DSL light should not blink but glow continually for uninterrupted internet connection. But at times this light goes off and blinks for long periods and I loose my net connectivity. I fear this is because of BSNL's substandard modem. Am I right? If its so what can I do to get an uninterrupted internet connection. Should I go for a new one. If so suggest one better (especially in terms of connectivity and features) modem. Also with the present modem I'm not able to get wifi signal hardly 15m from the modem (1 wall is there in between). I've heard that wifi's range is 100m. With new modem I expect good wifi range.

Try with basics first before opting for a new equipment.
1. Check if you can replace the cable splitter with a friend's.
2. Test the modem at your friend's place. Make sure you know the configuration settings before trying this.
Only then decide on a new modem.
Wi-fi modem buying advice is available in a lot of previous threads so no need to open a new thread for it.
