1) Pausing live TV will work if the software supports it (most probably it will). But don't think of it as working in sync with the cable connection. When you pause live TV, the s/w starts recording the show on your HDD with with a time lag. So What you will actually be watching won't be a live broadcast, it will be a show with a time lag (of maybe 5-10 sec). So when you pause, the recording goes on in the background, and when you press play again, it will resume. Hope you got it.

2) Regarding ad-skipping, even though I have never tried it coz my TV tuner went bust, you could try out the instructions on this site: *geneomatic.com/wordpress/?p=6 (I had it bookmarked)

What caught my attention were these lines:
ShowAnalyzer is an application that scans video files for various items such as channel icons and screen fades to determine the start and stop of commercial segments. It records the location of commercials (in the video timeline) in small text files with the same name as the video file so SageTV can use them later to skip that section marked as commercial.
Do try and tell if it works.

To pause Live TV look for the feature called 'Time Shift' on your TV Tuner Application. Once you press the Tine Shift button, with a buffer of about 5 to 10 secs the TV Tuner application will enable the Play / Pause buttons.
Press the Pause button and now the broadcast will pause at your end (Thru Hard Disk Recording) until you play it (or your HDD Free space is over with all buffering!!)
I do it several times on my TV Tuner (TechCom) and it's useful.

Which TV Tuner card are you using?
