hi,

my friend has a brand new dell inspiron 6000 with windows Media Center Edition installed...adn i was surprised to see totally 75 processes running in his system.... :-o he has 2 antivirus softwares... but even then 75 is toooooo much... i have posted the hijack this log here... pls help with this... andi also have askedhim to uninstall 1 antivirus software, preferably symantec! :D as i dont like it... and its basically system hogger...

I also own dell 6000......but it has maximum of 34 processes at startup.
Neways i tweaked it coz it was initially aving around 40 processes on startup with winxp Pro!
I seriusly recommend u using winxp manager.....and tweak ur system and remove the unwanted services and startup programs. Also NAV has around 10 processes. I recommend to use kaspersky instead it has 2 processes !
U may also use spy sweeper as it notifies u whenever a startup program has been added.

Ok so I filtered the running processes report and I can see only 60 processes that were running at the time of taking this hijackthis log. I can't comment about other 15 that you are reporting but from these 60, I will tell you what you are running. You decide what you want to run and what not. Here is the list of program with number of processes it is running. You can stop all of them if you check under msconfig.
Symantec/Norton Antivirus - 17 Processes

Intel Wireless LAN Manager - 8 Processes (Disable them if you don't use Wi-Fi)

Trend Micro - 6 Processes

Touchpad Utility - 2 Processes (Try disabling. If touchpad stops working, enable again)

Intel utility - 2 Processes (Try disabling just like touchpad)

MusicMatch Jukebox - 2 Processes (Disable Disable Disable!!!)

Windows Defender - 2 Processes (Keep if needed)

National Instruments License Manager - 2 Processes (Do you need it? Decide by your self)

Microsoft Debug Manager - 1 Process (Disable at ALL cost)

Digital Line Detect - 1 Process (If you never connect your modem from behind an EPABX, you don't need it)

Network Power Management (NICCONFIGSVC.exe): 1 Process If you don't require power management for your network card, disable it.

Then there are 4 processes that involve zipgenius, firefox, IE and hijackthis.
In total these are 49 processes, remaining 11 are Windows processes and you can reduce them by disabling un-needed services. Follow some good guide from net.

Symantec and Norton Antiviruses are the worst memory eaters and machine slowers.. i think its better to use some other AV...
