Would people pay nearly $14 a month to use Instagram on their phones without ads? How about nearly $17 a month for Instagram plus Facebook—but on desktop?

That is what
Meta Platforms META -1.92%decrease; red down pointing triangle

wants to charge Europeans for monthly subscriptions if they don’t agree to let the company use their digital activity to target ads, according to a proposal the social-media giant has made in recent weeks to regulators.

The proposal is a gambit by Meta to navigate European Union rules that threaten to restrict its ability to show users personalized ads without first seeking user consent—jeopardizing its main source of revenue.

Meta officials detailed the plan in meetings in September with its privacy regulators in Ireland and digital-competition regulators in Brussels. The plan has been shared with other EU privacy regulators for their input, too.

Meta has told regulators it hopes to roll out the plan—which it calls SNA, or subscription no ads—in coming months for European users. It would give users the choice between continuing to access Instagram and Facebook free with personalized ads, or paying for versions of the services without any ads, people familiar with the proposal said.
Under the plan, Meta has told regulators it would charge users roughly €10 a month, equivalent to about $10.50, on desktop on a Facebook or Instagram account, and roughly €6 for each additional linked account, the people said. On mobile devices the price would jump to roughly €13 a month because Meta would factor in commissions charged by

Planning to launch a subscription option for core Meta services is a major turnaround for the company. Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has long insisted that his core services should remain free and supported by advertising so that they can be available to people of all income levels.

Lmao. I'd quit if they did that here.

But then I'm not on FB or Insta anyway.
I really want to exit FB and whatsapp. But you know how it is right. Meta platforms are actually delusional. Zuck is starting to lose it. But then again, he is seeing thousands pay for twitter blue subscription

If only we could import people to signal, i would never use whatsapp again.
OR
I wish Whatsapp provided APIs, and the signal team could just implement multi messanger support. I'd contribute myself to signal-ios if that were ever to happen.

This is my personal gripe with closed of messengers.

IMO there should be a standard instant messenging protocol and everyone should implement it. This would create more competition among messengers and also make them cross app.

There is already XMPP that does this and several services like GTalk and Facebook chat used to use it back in the day (though they weren't cross platform). So you could use a third party XMPP client for these chats instead of the official apps. Then they all locked down their apps and here we are ever since.

The only way there can ever be such a thing is if an open source messenger becomes overwhelmingly popular. Which will never happen as there is no marketing.
Until then, closed source messangers will do their shenanigans as they want to harvest customer data. :(

IMO there should be regulations from authorities for this. Try to make social media into a protocol similar to email.

In a free market nobody is stopping them from making their apps this way.

Though there are Matrix based messaging apps that you can use, albeit with some pains.

Yes, I read about this. I was really happy for a while.

However, Apple is rumoured have found a way to circumvent this by creating a "Made for iPhone" program for USB-C devices to be used with iPhones.

According to the leaker, Apple is bringing the Made For iPhone (MFi) program to the newest set of iPhones with this new port — adding a verification chip to the port that will artificially restrict the charge and data speeds of any third party accessory that doesn’t pay the fee to be on this program.

old facebook messenger used to work with pidgin(pre 2010). It used an open API for message exchange. Yes only live messaging worked but it worked in a Open source messenger nonetheless

Facebook will never go back to that now

Thats old rumors, Im holding a 15 pro max right now and it works perfectly fine with any regular USB C cable.
My kishi v1 doesnt work but the kishi v2 works according to reddit.

Even my Samsung 860EVO works fine to record pro-res video. So yes, the EU really strong armed apple into this.

It seems they want to follow the path of Twitter/X. This could also be an experiment by Meta.

I'm not fond of WhatsApp's new channel feature, so I'm considering leaving Meta apps.

I am ready to leave FB. Almost no value for me as a user. WhatsApp might be a bit complicated. Don't know why people it using even as a official channel of communication over email in some cases

When Whatsapp brings feature where user either has to subscribe to monthly service or watch the ads, people will move to another messaging service.
What do you guys feel is better, feature rich freeware with ads or monthly paid subscription?

For me its such a hard choice because on top of having living expenses and EMIs, I do not want to pay monthly subscription for literally everything, e.g. multiple streaming sites(with exclusive contents), VPN, Youtube, music streaming service, antivirus/malware protection etc.

I think it was the best time you left. The new "Timeline" facebook it has been all downhill. Atrocious product to use, wholly dependent on the algo instead of the content/friends you have that post content.
I had joined Facebook only to play Mafia Wars, back when everyone else were on Orkut.

hehe I was a huge mafia wars guy too. Had the max 500 sized crew in the game. Good memories. Sadly Zynga went under and the game got deleted completely from the internet

According to Wikipedia, they were bought by Take-Two Interactive. But yeah, Mafia Wars is gone now.
