Govt looks to hike minimum net speed nearly four-fold (~2Mbps)

Lost in speed
Days of low internet speed on mobile and broadband networks could soon be over. The government has kickstarted the process of giving a boost to the minimum-mandated internet speed from existing 512 kbps to at least 2 Mbps and more.

The telecom secretary said India required faster speed in the wake of gradual transformation of the country to a digital economy. These include initiatives such as smart cities, digital India programmes, efforts on digital payments, and 5G.

Asked whether 2 Mbps - which is also being pushed forward by regulator Trai - will be sufficient for digital transformation, she said, "2 Mbps is the basic minimum. We should definitely mandate this. If at all, it should be higher than that. It cannot be lower than that."

Already BSNL has implemented the same. i feel the govt should fix certain minimum speeds for 2g, 3g,4g etc. Also strictly implement the same. Many telecom operators fleece us by promising 4g but their speeds are not even to the srandard of 3g.

BSNL better fix their own speeds sooner. Many people here were frustrated when the exchange office people replied there is hardly any difference in 2.0 Mbps and 1.8Mbps.(1.5?). Even though their whole campaign was advertised on minimum 2Mbps speed promise.

bsnl has again restarted the happy browsing scheme. Earlier they had run this scheme for three months. Under the happy browsing scheme even after FUP is over the same speed will be continued.

Just posted about this in BSNL broadband query thread. You need to contact local exchange to increase your line speed to 8/10mbps as by default it is fixed at 2/4mbps assuming it is not already done & poor speeds are not because of poor line condition.
