Transporting A Desktop: How hard is it ?

Has anyone in here tried transporting/relocating an entire desktop ? I mean inter-state transfer. I'm looking to know the hassles involved, how hard was it to pack things, etc.

Just shifted to Lucknow from Patna via transporter (by road). Before that brought the desktop from Kolkata to Patna by train.

But what exactly do you want to know?

If it isn't an emergency then upgrade after you relocate.Freak 'incidents' can happen to anyone.

How hard was it to bring the desktop by train ? Did you dismantle it and take the valuable parts separately or were you able to carry the entire thing in one go ?

Its not exactly an emergency but let me put it this way - I haven't gamed for 6 years and plan to get back to gaming which is not possible without a new rig, so if it is not too hard, I may as well do the build sooner :-D

Well generally transporting a desktop is a easy affair. Depending on how you handle it. You can either go the enthusiast way and dissamble the whole thing and take the parts in their original packaging, or just stuff the whole desktop in a suitcase / trolley .

No, everything was installed when I first brought my PC to Patna from Kolkata. This time around I only remove the graphics card from my main rig & disconnected the PSU cables and tie them up, while keeping CPU cooler (you may want to remove in case of an aftermarket cooler) and other stuffs as it was. The HTPC was kept as it was. I put the cabbies in their respective boxes, and lined them up with thermocol sheets (even normal newspaper, bubble wrap etc. in good quantity should do ;)). Transporter did the tying up of the boxes.

For monitor, TV all the original cartons were there, so no problem faced.

But there's always some risk involved, as one of colleagues had her LCD TV & some other stuffs broken during transfer and that too by Agarwal Packers above everyone else.

As long as you take proper care during packing and if the goods are transported in a single vehicle, there's lesser chance of any damage.

In the olden days, people used to suggest parking the HDD head before transport. Do not know if it is valid still or how to do it.

What parts in a desktop will likely be sensitive to transportation?
1. Cabinet - Denting
2. HDD - Read / Write head ?? (not sure)
3. Optical Drive - Has moving parts but will they be affected by transportation?
4. Fans - Should be OK I guess.
5. All cables should be disconnected, wound carefully and packed.
6. Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor, Speakers to be packed individually.

Anything else?

Sounds like a handful of work. I think I'm better off just keeping things as they are and upgrade AFTER moving. Until then, I guess KMines, Angry Birds and random online games will have to do

I tried to bring my PC from Jharkhand to Kerala via courier and see what happened:mad: hard disk malfunctioned (had to purchase new one) , local brand cabinet sixty percent crushed and it's looks like an omen to me. I am also having a transferable job so if some one having better options help us please.

As long as the styrofoam spacers and thermocol sheets of the cabinet are intact, there's lesser chance of any untoward happening, but take personal care, as the transporter guys will treat them similarly to other furnitures.

In my case, I packed all my digital equipments myself down to the external HDDs. And most of my purchases are online (including current cabbies & monitor), never faced any problem.

I have shifted my complete setup as mentioned in my signature from Delhi to Pune via train. WHat I did was removed all HDD, gpu, ram, motherboard, etc from my haf932 as I was having original boxes. All components packed in box and put inside big bag. Cabinet wrapped with thermacol along with bedsheet (waste) as I was not having haf932 box. Monitor was in its own box. So I was having total 3 stuff ie cabinet inside bedsheet, Bag having all components (Only mobo box, GPU box and sound card box) and Monitor box. It was not that difficult as it seems if you have passion and dedication to take your system along with you or if you cant survive without your system.

I had shifted my whole system by train last month(Roorkee to Mangalore). I had packed the cabinet, monitor, speakers, KB/Mouse etc in their own original packing with the thermocol intact. It took me more than 3 hours to tie up all the things snug and tight. Initially i was worried about the HDD getting damaged but it is working without any hitches till now.

Democracy is a myth
I shifted from Mumbai to Pune with my desktop. Then shifted again to Mumbai with my desktop
Then again shifted to kolkata from Mumbai.

No issues.

Talk to a good packers and movers. They would do the packing very well and infront of you. You could even opt for insurance for this. Charge 3% of total desktop price. You might need to talk with insurance guys for this one.

My advice, keep out ur HDDs and carry 'em urself. They are too sensitive to handle little bit of shaking.
