windows xp stuck with desktop screen

My windows get stuck with desktop screen visible but not able to perform any action. There is mouse movement but not able to select or click because that does not work. Do i need to format it? Is there any alternate fix? If formatting is neccessary then how do i retrieve my important documents from C drive because i am not able to access windows content.

1. Did you try the windows keys on the keyboard? Does it open the start menu? IE ascertain if ur keyboard is responding.
2.Is the keyboard working in BIOS/ Pre Windows load(press F8)

fixed it by using the windows xp cd in repair mode and restored it. neways thnx 4 the suggesations.
