Microsoft's finally ready to take the wraps off Windows Mobile 6, the long-awaited successor to Windows Mobile 5 (what else?) that's been baking in the oven for a while now as "Crossbow."

The platform formerly known as Pocket PC Phone Edition has become Windows Mobile 6 "Professional," while its more pocketable little brother, the Smartphone, has become "Standard" and plain ol' Pocket PCs are "Classic."

I had read about it in a computing journal. The 6.0 version can handle 100 (prollly 1000) times more processes than WinMobile 5.0

Microsoft plans on Monday to officially announce Windows Mobile 6, formerly code-named Crossbow, at the 3GSM trade show in Barcelona. The first devices using the software aren't expected until spring, however, with the bulk of products using the new operating system likely to come in the second half of the year.

Among the most visible changes is the ability to type in a few letters of a song, contact or e-mail subject and have the phone automatically show only matching results. The software also supports HTML e-mail. But for Exchange messages to be viewable in that form, a company also has to have Exchange 2007, the new version of Microsoft's e-mail server software.

Windows Mobile 6 also builds in support for Windows Live instant messaging and e-mail, which enables users to see whether a contact is online and to get their Hotmail or Windows Live Mail messages pushed down automatically.

About time. Windows Mobile 5.0 does needed a UI facelift, Windows Mobile 6 is based on technologies similar to Windows Vista, though do next expect it to run Aero.

Well....the biggest benifit of having a mobile phone or PDA or Smartphone with Symbian OS, or Windows Mobile is 3rd party application, which the iPhone will not support. You can make your WM 6 device look like anything else, you can change the theme, icons...UI anything, however you cannot do the same with iPhone

So far there are no devices announced with WM6, personally, I would say to hold back upgrades, the next OS codename Photon brings some radical changes to the Core, & most of the features available in WM6 are alreaedy available in WM5 with 3rd aprty apps, WM 7 is what you should look for. A device with WM7 will hold easily for 4 years with whatever u want

The following are few features new to Windows Mobile 6

New features include:

- HTML support in email
- Windows Live for Windows Mobile
- File transfer capability in Windows Live Messenger
- New versions of mobile Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with rich editing
- Remote wipe capability for stolen and lost devices
- Call history in contact cards
- Tight Vista integration
- "Calendar ribbon" for more easily viewing schedule by day or week
- New versions of .NET Compact Framework and SQL Server built
