I have orginal Win XP Media Center 2005...today when I tried to update my OS on Microsoft website (using "WINDOWS UPDATE) I am getting the following problem
"[Error number: 0x8024001D]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem."
Now when I checked the "Self-Help Options" in Microsoft website there is not mention of the above said error. I do not have any firewall blocking Windows updates.
Does anyone know the cure?
Thanks in advance.

Thank you for contacting us at Microsoft Technical Support.

This is regarding your query, which you have logged with us regarding " Windows Update Issue : Problem With Windows XP Home Edition".

We would suggest you to isolate your PC from any Network/LAN and try to update the critical patches as a standalone PC. If you are using proxy server or you are behind an organization firewall then please make sure that the settings are configured correctly by contacting your Network Administrator.

In case you are using a Proxy Server, Please let us know the details of the Proxy Server.

We would suggest you to follow the given steps:

Step 1:

If you have installed any third party antivirus software or firewall in the system such as ZoneAlarm, Norton Software. If so, please disable all the antivirus and firewall software in the computer before you perform Windows Update.

Step 2:

1. Open any webpage

2. Click Tools

3. Click Internet Options

This will open the Internet Properties dialog box

4. Click Delete Cookies

5. Click Delete Temporary Internet Files

6. Delete All Offline Contents

7. Click Apply and Click OK

8. Restart PC

Step 3:

1. Close all running programs on your PC

2. Click Start

3. Click Run

4. Type %temp%

This will open the Temporary Folder

5. Select all the contents and delete the files and folders

Step 4 (Windows XP Only):

Rename the Edb.log file

This issue may occur if the hotfix installer references the Edb.log file, and the file is corrupted. To resolve this issue, rename the Edb.log file.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start Windows Explorer, and then open the following folder: C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\
2. Right-click the Edb.log file, and then click Rename. Rename the file "Edb.old."
3. Start Internet Explorer, and then open the Windows Update Web site to continue the updates.

If you still cannot install the updates, rename the CatRoot2 folder.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start Windows Explorer, and then open the following folder: C:\WINDOWS\system32\
2. Right-click the CatRoot2 folder, and then click Rename. Rename the CatRoot2 folder "CatRoot2old".
3. Start Internet Explorer, and then open the Windows Update Web site to continue the updates.

Visit the www.windowsupdate.com and load the critical updates.

In case the problem persists we would suggest you to send us the windowsupdate.log for further analysis.

Note : There is no space between windowsupdate.

In Microsoft Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, WindowsUpdate.log is located in the C:\Windows folder, where C: is the hard disk drive where Windows is installed

In Microsoft Windows 2000, WindowsUpdate.log is located in the C:\Winnt folder, where C: is the hard disk drive where Windows is installed.

Please provide us with the following information:

1. Operating System

2. Product ID of the Operating System

Please follow the given steps to locate your Product ID for your Operating System

1. Right click the "My Computer" Icon on the Desktop

2. Click Properties

3. This will open the System Properties dialog box

4. Click the General Tab

5. In the General Tab locate the 20 digit long number in front of Registered to : . This is the Product ID.

In case the Product ID contains OEM we would request you to let us the know the brand of the PC for example (IBM, Dell, Compaq, HP, HCL etc)

We will appreciate if you can update us regarding the current status of your problem, so that we can resolve your query on early basis.
