Wifi router signal decays too quick.

I have a TPLINK TL-WR740N, and its signals are quite weak, and decay very fast.

Barely 5 meters and 1 wall away, the signal strength drops to 3 bars.

The signal is almost gone even from 10m away.

The device is placed in an central-ish room, and even 1 room away, there's usually only 2-3 bars worth of signal strength. I should mention that the router is almost 5+ years old. Maybe its simply gotten too old to work?

Update firmware. Or try to install open source.

Install some wifi monitoring software(inssider old free version still available online)/app( *play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keuwl.wifi&hl=en_IN ) to check if there is interference from other wifi networks.

Try the following
1. Some routers have option to set signal strength. Check if any such setting is available
2. Manually set the channel and try different channels
3. Temporarily disable WPA Security and check if there's any difference when unsecured
4. As already suggested check for other networks nearby
5. Do a Hard Reset and re-setup of the router
6. If you have a 2.4 GHz Cordless phone, temporarily stop its usage and check if it makes any difference.
