why does this happen ?

my MTNL dial-up connection goes dead (no data transfer). it is about to disconnect. but when i start some sites (www.timesofindia.com in particular) the connection is all of a sudden rejuvenated.

is there any black-magic at work ? are there any other such sites ? does the ping command work in the same way?

how do u know the connection is going dead ?
unless u disconnect ur internet is still on ! there is no rejuvination takin place
if ur talkin abt the 2 monitors icon in ur system tray they basically show data activity
so if u stop browing they wont blink
once u start browsing and data transfer takes place they will

clarification

let me tell you what exactly happens. once there is no activity (data transfer) for a while and i try to refresh a page, it doesnt refresh. but once i visit these sites (www.timesofindia.com or www.google.co.in) the page starts loading on its own. if at all i dont visit these 'special' urls the page doesnt load at all and i get a "the page cannot be displayed" error.

I thnk tht times of india and rediff uses servers based in india so it connection time is fast. most of the other servers are outside india so they are slow... and in ur case dead..

proximity to indian servers might be the reason for this phenomenon. but then this should happen for most of the indian sites. also is www.google.co.in hosted in india?

what actually goes on behind the scenes to make this happen?

Coming back to life ..
Okay .. After you connect to the net, do this :
Start > Run > Cmd <Press Enter>
In the Command Window, type :
Ping -t 66.102.7.104 <Press Enter>

It will keep pinging Google and will keep alive your connection ..
