very weird wifi issue!

hi,
i am facing a very strange issue with my home-wifi, have searched tirelessly for a solution but all in vain.
in my home we use a dataone broadband connection and a standard nokia siemens wifi modem. it has a pretty good range and normally my asus laptop gets a "fair" signal in my room. but since last 4 days this is happening - internet would work normally for some time, then it'll stop working (even though the wifi keeps showing good signal) and after 5-10 seconds internet will resume. this happens every 5 to 10 minutes. the weird thing is that it works normally when i keep my laptop in the room where the modem is. i know that speed varies with distance, but why does internet drop even though the wifi signal is strong enough? and till 4 days back, internet in my room was stable enough for me to play battlefield 3 on it for hours.

wifi on my ipod and phone is working normally, so i don't think it's a problem with the modem. i have already tried reinstalling the drivers of the laptop's network adapter.

i am using Asus K53SM SX010D laptop, with Windows 7 Ultimate. one thing i'd like to mention (it may or may not be connected to this problem) is that my AVG antivirus trial ended around the time this problem started. i mention this here because i found a person stating online that his norton av was creating the exact same problem, which got rectified when he uninstalled it and used avast instead! i tried this. didn't work.

please help :( thanks a lot! :)

UPDATE: somebody please help! updating the drivers of the wireless adapter didn't help.
