unable to install quake III arena

Whenever i try to install the game QUAKE III ARENA on my win xp based comp, i get the error msg:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application.


HOW DO I INSTALL THE GAME?

PLZ HELP

Do you have windows xp service pack 2 installed.Because after installation of Service Pack 2, Windows XP may display an error message relating to "AUTOEXEC.NT" when trying to run certain 16-bit applications.

It may happen because of virus infections.

yea.... i do have win xp sp2.

but the same error also came on a friend's comp which was running on win xp sp1
