I’m pretty sure you heard about eeePC from Asus - this super small notebook has been an instant hit. Even though the 4GB version of Asus’ elfin Eee PC isn’t exactly easy to get hold of, some system sellers have started taking advance orders for the as-yet-unreleased 8GB model. Set be available in both white and black versions, the 8GB solid-state disk Eee PC comes with 1GB of DDR 2 memory - double that installed in the 4GB model.

Like that machine, the 8GB incarnation has 802.11b/g Wi-Fi; three USB ports; a 10/100Mb/s Ethernet port; a 7in, 800 x 480 display; and a 900MHz Intel Celeron M ULV processor underclocked to 630MHz. The sub-sub-notebook comes pre-installed with Linux and a basic user interface, though it’s easy to tweak to gain a full Linux desktop, to install Windows XP or even Mac OS X Leopard. The word mobility gets redefined and with 1 gig of memory and more storage capacity, this really becomes an interesting offer.

does it have SD card slot(s)? I can then expand the memory...

I think its wise to wait for the 10" model due to the much larger size.

can anyone tell me which is the best distro for it? Will ubuntu 7.10 function full speed?

^it bundles custom Xandors Linux :D Xandros is very window-ish distro( I hate it for signing with M$ for patent FUD)

Xubuntu+gtk apps will be a better option.

Even if the 8GB model costs 18k, for a few thousand more you'll get a proper laptop. The only advantage is the SIZE and solid state memory

That's the right way to look at Eee PC. It's not a replacement for budget laptops.

The 8GB model is now available in US for $499 while 4G and 4G Surf retail for $399 and $350. So, by the time ASUS makes it available in India (late Jan 2008), these would get a rough pricing of Rs. 20,000 and only north. Now that cheap as everyone expected to be.

So, I wouldn't be too optimistic for a 'very affordable' Eee PC in India.

^it looks little odd!i mean like old macs in 80's :D they shud have tried some new look!

yes the eee pc does look quite ugly. funnily enough, the OLPC looks better.

I too don't think the EEE PC is worth buying anymore, unless the 16 GB model comes to india for under 12,000.

I mean, with 20K already, why not pay 7K more for a half decent lappy? When AMD Fusion finally comes out, I suppose decent Laptops will come at even 18-20K.
