Larry Dignan sets himself up for some nasty email from the Mac zealot crowd, who would prefer spending December dreaming about Macworld next month:

I’ve compiled all the security flaws in Mac OS X and Windows XP and Vista and placed them side by side. This is significant because it shows a trend that can give us a good estimate for how many flaws we can expect to find in the coming months. The more monthly flaws there are in the historical trend, the more likely it is that someone will find a hole to exploit in the future.

I used vulnerability statistics from an impartial third party vendor Secunia and I broke them down by Windows XP flaws, Vista flaws, and Mac OS X flaws. Since Secunia doesn’t offer individual numbers for Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.4, I merged the XP and Vista vulnerabilities so that we can compare Vista + XP flaws to Mac OS X. In case you’re wondering how 19 plus 12 could equal 23, this is because there are many overlapping flaws that is shared between XP and Vista so those don’t get counted twice just as I don’t count something that affects Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 twice.

This shows that Apple had more than 5 times the number of flaws per month than Windows XP and Vista in 2007, and most of these flaws are serious. Clearly this goes against conventional wisdom because the numbers show just the opposite and it isn’t even close.

Study the architecture , working and concepts of UNIX (thus Linux) i bet you will appriciate it !! if you don't then you are just blinded !! You will stay newb forever in the very wide subject "OS Architecture" !!
Not that i hate windows !! i like windows too ! with time things will change MS may not go open source .. it will find something between open and closed !
Let me remind you windows architecture is based on UNIX architecture .. they learnt it from UNIX

and dude if you have no knowledge about OS architecture then just shut up !! pretty simple !

i am trying to put some sense into you fanboys .. i like windows for what it is .. and linux for what it is .. same with MAC .. MAC is not just something to laugh about .. MAC is made by a genius .. just use MAC once you will know ! you stand no where .. just passing comment MAC $ucks .. hardly matters for a mac user .. he will just thrash you instead

in 2-3 years .. my OS will be Out ! (yes its just for sake of learning purpose and as my project to help me get placed well)

what? M not some engg student, i just want to fire up 3ds max, make a few NURBS lines or A solid model from poly modeling, why would I care about the OS archi? I want to do my work, not to hunt for all these...those days are gone now.

just came here to read what's soo wrong with mac developers and saw your comments

just one thing to say . use windows be more productive and be a winner ... let others use linux and mac and be losers .. good for you !! why tell them use windows by showing faults in mac and linux .. like this one ! you get absolutely nothing or may be you do get something !

and yes .. Windows OS basic architecture is still the same as it was in 1990 ! and its not going to change for next 10 years .
i heard some new tech is going to come .. something like OS in Mobo.. but not a complete OS but something that helps out OS .. till then its not going to change .. ! of course how MS implements the basic ideas has changed !

^^I suppose this may cause the Vi$ta Fanboys to celebrate, but guess what? Ubuntu was not there in the comparison Thats only because security vulnerabilities can't happen in OSS easily, due to the speed of error reporting and correction, along with the more Classic UNIX architecture Linux has compared to Macs.

When Apple Decided to make an OS, they took the then most stable OS, FreeBSD, and modified it. But some so called usability enhancements like widgets ended up making lots of holes into the MacOS, whose numbers surprised people who thought a derivative of FreeBSD must naturally have as much, if not more security than its parent. Similar is the story when Apple made Safari from Konqueror.

I am not against Apple, but in the excuse of usability, they ignored the security risks associated with the same. The iPhone for example, runs programs in Root mode, a shocking find for security advocates.

Its about time apple decided that Eye-Candy was not the only thing thats important, and Security is important too. Infact, it may be summarised that the main reason Apple Macs sell is because of the fact that their apps are tailored to the machine, along with nice usability. But all this has taken its toll on security too.
