Suggest OS for 1GB RAM Office Laptop

No heavy usage, i searched online i found many os running below 1gb ram, mainly are Linux. And found some Android os also.
I added to download list.
Windows comes handy, and i tired Ubuntu os only. So i need to prioritise OS.

So just suggest me name and version of OS and link for download. That will be helpful.

For this setup Arch Linux with XFCE is recommended because of very low resource usage. But installing it on system is a PITA because of CLI so I guess Puppy linux can do the job here.

You can also explore Linux Mint LMDE2 which is lighter than other Mint distros (coming from personal experience).

So I guess it boils down to Puppy Linux or Mint LMDE 2 for me. Whatever fits your needs, I would suggest mint because it just makes everything work from the beginning, codecs and all that ****. Though you might want to switch to Audacious for audio player because the one they give (Banshee) is a resource hog. Other than that, can't really find any faults in it. Works perfectly for me. Desmond uses Arch but as I said not recommended for first time users.

A 64 bit os is a bit more resource intensive as compared to 32 bit,esp when it comes to ram usage.I had an older system that had 1 gb ram and i used to experience frequent lag and slowdowns after installing vista x64 bit on it-the problem was mitigated to some extent only after i increased its ram to 2 gb.Therefore as your laptop has just 1 gb ram, you'd be better off installing a 32 bit os only.

And you should check the compatibility of your laptop with win 10 before you go ahead and install it-sometimes older hardware don't work properly on newer versions of windows (even though they might satisfy the min. requirements)as driver support for their old/legacy onboard peripherals (like integrated graphics, audio etc)may not be present in the new OS.

For your needs, win 7 32 bit would be best suited i think.

If its an office laptop, why are you installing OS in it? The office facilities dept will be responsible for installing the OS using the volume licenses the company purchased.

Actually there is no guarantee that will look into that, because laptop is 9 years old and i think for company it's trash. When brother will handover or request new laptop, company (reliance) will not ask us os thing.

Yeah you are right about licence but this laptop is used by 3 people, and without any active security (Symantec endpoint expire and not updating), lots of issue, slow operations, this laptop really need format. I tried repairing with lots of tools and softwares, but it did not help.

Still i asked my brother about formatting and installing new os, he will ask other colleagues in office. And i will let you know.

I will install new os, when brother want to return laptop or asked new laptop i will install windows 7 professional again, thats what i was going to do.

Right. It's 9 year old laptop, and windows 10 might not be compatible.
Installation on computer is easy compare to laptop considering compatibility Issue.

Also, one clarification is needed, The SAP softwares you mentioned in the 1st post, must work on the OS you choose??

Actually neither me nor brother works on SAP or any office software. He may be using ms office. These softwares were there installed alredy. And only 1-2 softwares are working/opening correctly, other does not open at all.

Not for work exactly. Just wanted to make sure if brother wants to return lappy or request new, there has to be softwares which are installed now.
And later i thought i can clone this c drive or will install windows 7 again after my use.

Last person from brother's office who used lappy, installed torrent and downloaded movies and those stuff was lying on desktop. So i dont know how much company look into laptop while giving it to others.
In my brothers case he got directly from his colleague not from company.

Again, if it is a company laptop, you might get some problems from the company side if you install another OS. Why can't you just ask your brother to get a new laptop issued from the company replacing the 9 year old one?

Well, regardless of what company thinks of it, it is still company property. Therefore formatting it without the company's knowledge would be a compliance violation that could get your brother in trouble.

So yes, its better to get confirmation before proceeding.

There are some problems and they want bulk request for new laptops.. and as of now there are only 3 request for laptops. They want more. How much, that I don't know.

So you are saying to drop idea of installing new OS.
As of now I do surfing and downloading. But surfing is too slow and painful. Not net speed, lappy speed. And there are many issues which are really bad, windows related, tried repairing, does not help.
After installing I will surf and download torrents.

Not in case of Linux. In fact most of the software there are made with 64 bit in mind so if you install 32 bit OS then it might give some hiccups and issues. I also installed 32 bit at first but faced some problems and switched to 64 bit. Works like a charm.

Unless you get permission from the company. Its not advisable to change the OS on that machine. If you can get the permission, you can do as your heart desires. :)

how about cortana running in background all the time. Apart from that, it start downloading all those music, notes, bla bla as soon as it connects to internet without telling you. I forgot all the app names now. By seeing with the config like 1Gb ram, i don't suppose OP have heavy usage, I would say go with Linux distros instead of Win10. WinXP is good option but the old look ...

Agreed. But all of the background crap can be stopped using certain softwares like Shut up 10 etc.

Pre installed apps means that start menu stuff on Windows 8.1.
Windows apps mail, calender, clock, calculator, Xbox store, weather, map, photos, people, etc etc.
There are many more on Windows 10 and new update Redstone have many more i guess.

I know what that means. But we can delete them all. Android phones from OEM's also come with bloatware but we can remove the same.
