Subtitle generator

Is there any good tool available which can generate English subtitles from movies or TV shows video files ? I tried a couple of options. Quite useless. Can't even generate a proper subtitle.

If you guys know of any method, please do share. Thanks.

PS : I am not looking for a perfect tool. I can go through and edit it if required.

I sincerely doubt there is any such tool. Generating subtitles on the fly requires some serious machine learning systems that are not possible in a desktop application. However, there could be online services that can do this if you upload a file to them.

I use SMPlayer (windows) and MX Player(android) which have the option to search for subtitles on opensubtitles and download compatible one.

As for dynamic subtitle generation, even Youtube messes it up some times.

I am ok with what VLC fetches for me. But some fails. There was one tool in which we have to extract audio and submit for speech to text locally. The whole process was so complex but we could do it offline using Google's speech to text engine. I was hoping to find a better tool.

i wonder how difficult it would be to cook up a real time generator using aws
Amazon Transcribe – Automatic Speech Recognition - AWS

I don't think it would be realtime. But perhaps if we could buffer some snips of the audio before playback, send it for processing and then get back the results before the video player has reached the point where it's needed, it could work. But then the user will have to bear AWS expenses for each request (unless it's within the free tier).

Still I don't think it would be fast enough to be real time.

Ok, here is one that is free, require no upload etc etc

BingLingGroup/autosub

You need to extract audio, split them, use with speech to text recognition engine and so on. However, don't expect one-click SRT output

Offtopic but why exactly the need to go through all this, unless it is some old/obscure/not-so-popular tv show then chances are that subtitle files are already available on Addic7ed.com - The source of latest TV subtitles & one can always edit them for grammatical errors which will be much faster than all this.

P.S. above assuming English audio.

You will find a lot of old TV shows without subtitles. Last week I had 2 new shows which had no subtitles. Depends a lot on which file you download. Some variants have unsync subtitles as well.

Well if it is popular old shows then dvd subtitles should be available online & it takes far less effort to convert/sync a subtitle from a given fps to a desired fps(say 29.97fps to 23.976fps). For new shows the subtitles are usually available within hours/day if it is a popular show.Of course if nothing is there then no other choice.

Variants. That is the issue. When Erodov made file of a show has subtitle, the same show mixed by Digit might not have one. Sadly, you took a long time and search to get the file for which subtitle is not made.

Main things to look for while searching/syncing subs:

1. There are mainly 2 sources for ongoing tv series: HDTV rips & Webdl rips. Subs for one source cannot be synced to other in a simple way.Groups within each source can be interchanged with regard to subs though(e.g.subs for lost s01ep01 hdrip-abc will work(or with very little modification/sync tweak) with lost s01ep01 hdrip-xyz but not with lost s01ep01 webdl-abc).

2. Dvd-rips/bluray-rips of tv shows are completely different from above 2 sources so only official subs incl in dvd/bluray are to be downloaded(usually titled as official/dvdrip subs)

3. webdl rips are always released later than hdtv rips so their subs too get released with a delay but webdl rips have usually better quality,no tv channel logo & no ads/breaks.
