Wire muncher!
hafnt seen a thread on this subject. so thot of compiling a few. some tips and tricks for the sony ericsson range of phones (exclusive k700i ones in the end):
note: not all tips may work for your sony ericsson phone.
1) to check the manufacturing info of the phone, remove the battery panel and search for the string "xxWyy" where xx will tell you the year and yy will tell u the week of manufacture of the transreceiver. you can also kno about the manufacturing info of the battery. (e.g if it says 03W28 it means that it was manufactured in the 28th week of the year 2003)
2) press these buttons in the order they are given to access the service menu which will give you info about the phone firmware, network, locking status and access to some service tests:
> * < < * < *
where "> = turn joystick right, "<" = turn joystick left.
3) for SE phones that feature the volume control on the side, press any of them in the standby mode to get instant phone status (like network, cell area, profile, model, sim number, free memory).
4) keep pressing either of the two volume buttons for 3 secs and the voice
dialing feature will be activated.
5) you can customise the online (WAP) button of the other side of the phone (if ur phone has 1) to goto write sms menu by following these steps:
create a new bookmark with any name and write mailto: in Address.
u can also use it as a template. for e.g if u want to create a new text message with Hello already written in it, the address should be
written as, mailto:Hello
that's a very nice trick as a new text message can be created with a starting phrase already written using the WAP button.
this way you can go to shortcut customisation and allot the left joystick press for a new shortcut! (for T6x0 users the left joystick press corresponds to the first entry in the shortcut menu)
6) when using the headset if you wanna turn of the phone speaker and activate only the headset then select the "silent" profile.
7) enable the call list to show enhanced info:
a) make sure your call list is full (30 numbers), and has a mixture of called, missed and recieved calls.
b) pick any number from the call list, and choose "edit before dialing".
c) remove all digits by pressing C. then press and hold 0 to get a + and then dial. your phone will now dial, but won't connect. hang up, and check your call list. you will now have an empty entry at the bottom of your call list.
this gives the following changes:
The first number on the list will be the last call, and not the last MADE call
as it was before. and if someone calls you, say twice in one day, both calls
will be shown, instead of only the latest.
if you want to remove these features, remove the empty post at the bottom of the call list.
8) highlighting texts:
when u are writing a message or anything else, u can highlight a part of it so that it can be erased or formatted quickly. to do that, press and hold a Volume Button and move the joystick to highlight.
9) Cut-Copy-Paste function (only available whn editing contacts in phonebook) h ighlight the contact to be edited and press More and choose Edit Contact.
now, for e.g if you hafta replace the number in Home by the number in Mobile, just highlight Mobile and press and hold * followed by 1, the number will disappear. highlight Home and press and hold * followed by 3. The number will be pasted here.
Cut - press and hold * then 1
Copy - press and hold * then 2
Paste - press and hold * then 3
(this works for the Txxx and Zxxx series)
10) this tip is for phones that haf low memory (like t and Zxxx series). when u click a pic in these phones they are stored in the raw jpeg format and end up taking as much as 50-80kb. to reduce the size of the image and compromise a bit on quality do this. goto to the options screen and select the rotate option. rotate the pic 4 times (but 360 degrees). after doing that you can see that the pic size is reduced to about 25-30kb max. tho you can see a bit of quality degrade. note that for some images the rotate option mite haf been greyed out. in such a case select the "edit" option and just put in a small pixel anywhere so that it is not noticalbe then save it and goto the rotate option again.
(be forwarned that there is no way to recover the original pic, so backup first!)
11) pressing the C button in standby for about 3 secs will activate the silent mode.
some specific k700i tips and tricks:
1) encode the songs in aac or mp3 wid stereo, 32kbps, 22khz and there a 5 min song will be reduced to under 900kb wid quite decent audible quality.
2) when in media player mode while playing media, keep pressing the right or left joystick to seek (guess this tip will work with phones wid media player built-in.
will post more when i get/discover more.
