In the zone
Go to registry editor > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Control Panel > Desktop > MenuShowDelay > put its value 0. Now, restart the system and your Start Menu will be very fast. run a virus scan on *housecall.trendmicro.com . do a scandisk and defrag of ur system. Reduce start up programs by msconfig.exe. Install anti-spyware programs and a good anti-virus like Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal Pro 5.0. Get it here htttp://www.kaspersky.com.

dear friends my cd writer at 40x used to write cds in 3 min 2 sec at average with athlon 2400+ and 256 mb ram.so i think he has a problem which is not concerned to ram.
so dear provide more info about ur OS.. from which soft u are writing cd.
also....about the fast booting...type msconfig in run menu.then click startup button and remove everything by unchecking and click ok.then restart.
now u wont have anything which will automatically starts with windows.this thing is normal with people new to computers.u shuld avoid installing useless programes which put themselves to startup and makes windows slow to boot.
if this doesnt show ny improvement provide info about ur os.cd burning soft used...at what speed.
yes pc is low on resources when cd is burning with 256 mb of ram....but it shuld not hang.do u really mean hang...or it goes really slow to open winamp.
while burning other applications will suffer opening so its normal if they take time to run..but they shuld never hang ur system unless u run doom3...and maya parallely....while buring.
so do provide every info u get and remove applications from startup list as i mentioned above....and do post here...ur problem will be solved.

He has a good config and yes 256MB is more than enough for normal use.
((But if he has only one stick of 256MB RAM the processor will not use dual channel and thereby low performance. If he gets one more 256MB stick then the processor can use dual channel and he will see a large performace boost which he can never expect.))

Anyway coming to your problem it would be due to spyware/virus infection causing the system to run slow.Better ask him to clean format the disk ,reinstall the OS, install SP2, install a good antivirus cum firewall like ZONEALARM (IMP:do it before configuring the LAN).

Even then if the problem persists then it could be faulty RAM or faulty assembling of hardware.

And also use Windows SP2 coz its the best and its lot more stable.

Try to get something for him from mars :) dinesh.May be he is running too many processes like anti-virus anti-...blah-blah like me which are hogging up the memory.

I think u may have to reinstall your OS. Do a formatting and clean install. I think this is the only u can solve this problem. OS may have configured itself wrongly while installing or it may be corrupt.

yes try reinstalling everything.............
if it happens again we can think beyond soft problem and can think that some hardware is culprit
