SIM card slot in lappy

There's a SIM card slot under my dad's lappy (ThinkPad L412). I have to unscrew and then remove a small cover which reveals the slot. I took out my mom's cell's SIM and inserted it into the lappy and switched it on. Unfortunately nothing happened...no 'new hardware' detected....nothing. Why is it there and what can it be used for? I thought it would enable me to use Airtel internet in the lappy itself without the need of the cell (Nokia 6030 which didn't come with a data cable and I don't think it can be connected to the PC).

I was searching about Dell XPS a few days ago. it also has a sim card slot. The US versions come with a WWAN card and allow it to use 3g network. However WWAN card is not available in Indian version of XPS.
