1) i got Windows 98, Windows XP and Linux (Redhat 9) in
my pc. what to do if i want to remove any one of those and still
want the others to 'hang around' (oops! not the system) i can
remove XP - no problemo... i shall format it through dos or a
bootup disk. what about 98 or linux? once, i formatted the Linux
drive but i got an error message telling about grub not recognizing
i had no option but reinstalled Linux.

2) what if Windows 98 and XP are only installed with 98 in C:\
and XP in D:\ and i want to remove 98 due to some domestic reasons,
and still want XP to work the way it was? or dont i have another
option and have to install both again?...

1) there is a boot option in Linux [sorry to say that where it is ex'ly, i forgot that one] just like boot.ini for windows. i'll send you the ex't location for linux. after modify the option, u can easily remove other O/S.
if you want to remove LINUX, format the partition, bootup your machine with XP, select repair and type FIXMBR. using 98, fdisk/mbr.

2) No need to install both the OS. first edit you boot.ini by ---
i. delete the Win98 entry. [use sys prop--adv--startup$reco-- edit]
ii. msconfig--- BOOT.INI--- [move down 98 entry--select XP --set it default]

if you doing it for very first time --- first modify (ii), then delete (i)

1.) If u hv Win 98, Win XP and Linux installed

(A.) To remove Linux and remain others:

Boot into DOS using 98 setup CD and give command:

fdisk/mbr

or boot using XP setup CD and enter into Recovery Console and give command:

fixmbr

After this command the Linux Boot loader will be gone and then u can safely delete all linux partitions in windows XP using Disk Manager.

(B.) To remove Win XP and remain others:

Boot in DOS using 98 Setup CD and give command:

sys C:

or boot using XP setup CD and enter into Recovery Console and give command:

fixboot

and then u can safely format the partition, where u installed XP.

(C.) To remove win 98 and remain others:

Simply format the partition where u installed 98 and then u can also delete its entry from C:\Boot.ini file.

------------------------------------------------------------

2.) If u hv only Win 98 and XP installed

(A.) To remove win 98 and remain XP:

Same as (C.) point of 1.):

Simply format the partition where u installed 98 and then u can also delete its entry from C:\Boot.ini file.

(B.) To remove win XP and remain 98:

Same as (B.) point of 1.):

Boot in DOS using 98 Setup CD and give command:

sys C:

or boot using XP setup CD and enter into Recovery Console and give command:

fixboot

and then u can safely format the partition, where u installed XP.

Hope it'll help u :D
