I have been in a dilemma in the past few weeks.

I was on the lookout for a portable MP3 player 4-8 gb with an expansion slot had finalised on Cowon D2 and then the Creative Zen. but today when i actually held them (had been to croma), they were toooo small, especially as i have large hands. So i was thinking that i should have a bigger screen. Gave a thought to the ipod touch, but its too expensive.

this gave me idea abt the PSP, it has a pretty good 4.3 in screen, video quality is excellent. what i am thinking abt is the audio quality. I have few questions abt PSP..

1. does the new psp slim have 2 inbuilt speakers or just 1 like the earlier?
2. does it have enough juice if i hook up high end earphones (Shures')? How would the quality be then?
3. Can i use it on the go (i currently use ipod 1 gb on my bike going to office)? I will be using the PSP in that way only.

and finally the most important question...........
which PSP????
PSP Fat or
PSP Slim

First off, the answer to your question depends on how much music you listen to.

If you listen to a lot of Music

Sadly, in this case, the PSP will just not cut it. Not because of SQ [the PSP is possibly the best sound I've ever heard, and that includes several iPods, my Creative Zen, Several Nokia phones and the SE W810i]. It can also drive any set of Shures pretty easily.

The only problem with the PSP's music capability is a lethal one, and that is the archaic Music management features. You can't even sort by using ID3 tags! OTG playlists are a no-no as well. Forget about managing a large collection on the PSP.

Besides, if you have a large collection, you're better off getting a HDD based player.

If you listen to some music, and want other stuff as well.

In this case, there is nothing that beats the PSP. Nothing. The PSP is the portable gadget to own. Nothing comes close in terms of features or performance. It gives you the best portable Gaming experience and one of the best possible portable video experiences with the gorgeous 4.3" screen. Once you mod it, you can do just about anything with it.

Unless you have a mammoth collection, the PSP is the device to get. Trust me, I own one. I would know.

Well, coming to the portability, it's not going to be easy to stuff the PSP into a jeans or shirt pocket, but a jacket pocket is just fine. If portability is a major issue, then don't get the PSP. [ironic really]

If you do decide to get it, get the slim version. You'll probably get a pre-modded one, and you have nothing to complain about with a slimmer design, TV-out and double the RAM.

Do you own a pair of Shures? Which one? And how much did you pay for em?

Nice to see some people on this forum actually go beyond the EP-630.

well not yet...as that one is another dilemma. Was going to order the e2c but the ebay seller said he didnt deliver to india.
regarding earphones i have decided to choose from Shure e2c, Weston UM1, V-moda vibe, V-moda bass freq and Etymotic er6i.
just waiting for a good deal, and someone who can deliver it to india.

P.S. i got the EP-630 and frankly speaking, they suck! earlier i had the in-ear headphones of sony walkman series phone and they were faaaaar better than the ep-630. am thinking probably i will buy the walkman series earphones until i get a good $100 pair.

FINALLY! Some-one who actually recognizes sound! I completely agree with you! The EP-630s may be great for the price, but they just do no cut it. Muddy, harsh.. grrr....

Get the Etymotic ER-6i. It is by far the best among those you mentioned. The UM1 is the most comfy though. Best of luck finding the ER-6is for a sane price in India.
