Friends,
I have opened a account in paypal. When I am trying to get verified with my debit card from Bank of Baroda. It is not accepting. The error message it is giving is that the bank cannot recognise the card. The problem I think is in getting the last three nos. at the back of the card. I am not being able to understand which last 3 digit to give. Because the way they are showing as example it is not there in that way at the back of the card. Or I have to have a credit card. But they are saying one can even use a debit card. I am sure people who are using the site will understand my problem. Please help me in detail as i have no person to go to who can give me a complete knoledge.

Thank You.

problem with these Debit Cards are that, they are not Internet ready... u have to see whether ur Bank can make it internet ready for u or not.. u can apply to get it Internet ready... as then only the Verification code will be given... Note the ATM password isnt the card verification code... :)

Thanks Sourav. But one more thing. Should I approach the bank branch or should I call their CC. And if any of the place they ask for the card no should i give them specially in CC? Or what should i say to avoid? Please dont take this question to be a silly one as i have very little idea and with all the hype about its security i am really concerned.

Thanks!

hmm.. 1st of all Customer Care wont ask u for the Card number... as i have seen with my credit card customer cares that u enter the number through phone keypad.. so when the Exicutive receives u he knows u are a valild card holder...

2nd Customer Care wont be able to give u the code right way... as its a service in most case its a paid service compair to the free debit card... so.. best is consulting the branch manager... as u have to do some paper work to get the card internet ready...

Just a note of caution. If you are going to use that debit card online. Don't keep too much balance in that account!

In credit card, when the bill comes you have an option of charge back and refusing to pay if its a fraud. But in debit cards, the amount gets deducted before you even know about it! :(

r u sure that we cant refuse a internet purchase by calling it fraud??

i am not sure but here is what i found out from sources from Bank of India and UTI (unofficailly ofcourse), before i took a cc i thought making my DC a internet ready card, back then i had a verbal comunication about it...

here is what they said...

when u make a Debit Card internet ready u also get that right to call a Internet purchase fraud if u feel so... offcourse whether its CC or DC in both case u have to prove that it was a genuine frouad....

Thanks Tuxfan and Sourav for further info. I have tried and found out that one cant use BOB DC for transaction in internet. So the matter ends for there. But as Tuxfan had mentioned earlier about denial of payment incase the transaction is fraud. Can anyone elaborate it and give a complete picture?
@ Sourav which bank`s DC and/or CC r u using and what r its facilities and the procedure to make it internet ready?

well UTI banks Visa DC can be upgread to Internet ready card... where as Bank of India and SBI provides a CC against ur Saving Account...

about Facility.. well as u see Visa or Master Card or any such credit card has a Verification code.. 3 digit or 4 digit... which is printed back of the card...

but debit cards dont come with that code... unless u make them internet ready... this facility is chargeble...

now when u get the code... then only u can make a Internet payment....

Now what TUX was poining...
normally what happens with Credit Card that u get a CC... and bank opens a CC account for u r self.. which runs on "0" balance... (means u dont have to deposite any thing there) and provides u a limit... suppose limit of 50,000/-... means like a Post Paid mobile connection... u can spend 50,000 with the card... then afther the month bank sends u a bill (if u have spend any thing on the card) then only u pay to the bank...

but with DC its kind a Pre Paid Mobile system... :p 1st of all to spend u have to diposite money to ur account in Bank... it means if u put 15000 in ur account, u can use only that...

but the problem with DC is if fraou happens till u dont renew ur pass book u cant know u lost some money... :( as with CC u will get the bill 1st so u can decide to ask the bank that i wont pay as i feel its a fraud... offcouse in both case u have to prove that... but with DC u have already lost the money... and as its "India" allthough u will prove that it was a genuine fraud, that will take some time.. and till then that money wont in ur hand... :(

hope this clear some thing :)

P.S. u r in Kolkata na.. umm.. Look for SBI Card... and if not when u chose a card make sure u have a cheque Drop box near to ur Office or resedence... :) also make sure the Bank gives u a Internet account to check current statement / and account details with Due and other stuff in real time :) not like it will give u every month... as that hearts.. as when u miss a billing date, the interest ratio will set ur back...

@Sourav Simply great! Now I have come to the end of this story! Please tell me how much will they charge to make a DC net ready and what is the annual fee? And also state the annual fee for CC for both the banks. U dont need to search for it and please dont tell me to search. Just tell me what u r experiencing so that i get a first hand knowledge. Bye!

really depends on the Bank.. umm.. cant say for sure but last time few years back UTI used to charge Rs. 750 per year...

well its not wise to get ur DC Internet Ready as now days Credit Cards are easy to come by...

so as now we are getting in to CC Funda.. u need to get a basic idea...

There are Many players in Kolkata...

Major Players are,
  • ICICI
  • CitiBank
  • HSBC
  • Stander Chatered
  • SBI
  • UTI

well now each has 15+ types of CC... in their Website they ask u to chose from.. Forget it.. u cant read and understand the ToS of all of those in even a month....

so what to do... Tell u what, Keep the basic thing in ur Mind.. and Dont aproch to the Back for a Card... let them come to u... :p wait few days.. as in the age of TeleMarketing u will get a Call.. as most of the banks carry out the application process through 3rd part agencys...

even if u dont get a call just drop an email to the banks web site asking them that u want a card... :p few banks has online application system... u may use that too...

but bank wont come to u.. that 3rd party agency will send some one of going to call u...

in this way u will have the much needed uper hand...

now when they come or contact...

1st Make sure when u select a back... u have their Cheque Drop box very close to u... now while selecting the card,

Make sure bellow things,

  • Its a Photo Card...
  • Its Free for Life time or Certain amount of time (5 - 7 years) then if u want u can surrender it free of cost...
  • There is no Monthly or Anuall Charge
  • You get Internet accunt to monitor real time transanctions
  • No extra charge while paying in USD or such... :p
  • SMS and Email notification of Billed amount and Due Date

and when agency finds the card for u... Read the ToS... dont trust their word and take ur time.... and u may post that skim here too :p....

when u apply u may get a higher CC limit... but dont take it... as a new user 25 - 30k is enough... :p as when u start using it Bank will later on push u to increase the limit... once again u will get the uperhand.. then if u feel u can increase it... :p

CC is not a big deal but for a new user its.. because misstake happens...

People say that fraud happens because of Banks fault... but thats not true.. yes back tries to get most out of u.. but they try not to break the law... its u who makes the misstake... thought few odd cases come up now and then.... but they get solve once u aproch to Consumer forum...

umm... back in 98 my father got the 1st CC... in our family... as Standard Chartered Bank was the 1st i guess in kolkata to come up with a CC...

now days he has 4 / 5 cards... but i see him using only one of ICICI... as its easy to pay the bill... both as it has ECS facility with SBI.. and drop box right in his office building...

I have only one card from CitiBank... :)

take an example for my CitiBank card... its good... i have a 43k limit... its free for life time... i have internet account to monitor real time usage check.. but the problem is very few Drop Box in Kolkata... 4 / 5 i guess (I use either Kanak Buliding or the Sector V).. :( where as SBI has most number of Drop box (as every ATM of SBI is a drop box lol..)... ICICI do a good thing too... they Set up box in office building where they have 50+ customer... for that reason 1 box is at my fathers office... but i guess he pays through ECS...

as i wrote Misstake are made by user... we too made a mistake in 99 while we are in Orrisa we bought 3 return ticket on the card and payed lots of bill through the card... but ticket and few bills were in the "B" billing cycle... where as rest all was in the "A" cycle (suppose A and B are 2 months) we got the bill for A month... we paid it.. but the B month billl didnt came and Papa went to a Project tour for few month... did use the card for 4 month.. so when "G" moth bikll came it came with a Huge interest... :( as the "B" month wasnt paid.. as we didnt received the bill later on with much letter writting lol.. StanChat did remove the Interest and asked us to pay the Bill only... but later on ICICI / CitiBank came and Papa went for those... :) and as CC came life time.. just packed them and put then in the box

Now suppose if the c-card is in my dad`s name and the paypal a/c is in my name will it create any problem? One more question - once the a/c gets verified will the money be directly sent to the bank a/c or will it be through the cc?(I mean the card through which the paypal a/c is verified is surrendered anytime will i stop receiving payments?

There should not be a problem in getting verified with your dad's CC.

The money will not be sent to the bank a/c or through the CC. They will remain in your paypal a/c. You can spend it or request for a cheque. They take charges for cheque.
