Hi pimpom, the topic "formatting dual os harddisk" has been moved by me here to discuss about the SCANDISK/CHKDSK in details.

Dear pimpom below i give an extract from the Microsoft website.

This issue occurs if any one of the following conditions are true: • You have scheduled the Chkdsk.exe program or the Autochk.exe program to run in Scheduled Tasks.
• A Windows registry setting has been set to run the Autochk.exe program at startup.
• Your hard disk is damaged and must be repaired.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Remove the Chkdsk.exe or the Autochk.exe program from Scheduled Tasks
Follow these steps to remove the Chkdsk.exe or the Autochk.exe program from the list of scheduled tasks in the Scheduled Tasks feature. 1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
2. Click either Chkdsk or Autochk in the list of scheduled tasks.
3. Under Folder Tasks, click Delete this item.

Method 2: Check the Session Manager registry entry
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. Follow these steps, and then quit Registry Editor: 1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute
3. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
4. Type autocheck autochk *, and then press ENTER.

Dear pimpom chkdsk is not meant for autorunning on your Windows XP computer untill and unless u either have the following conditions true.

You have scheduled the Chkdsk.exe program or the Autochk.exe program to run in Scheduled Tasks.
• A Windows registry setting has been set to run the Autochk.exe program at startup.
• Your hard disk is damaged and must be repaired.

Chkdsk should not run automatically just because your computer was improperly shutdown according to Microsoft. If this behaviour occurs in your computer you must have updated your copy of windows XP from a previous version of Windows ( win 98) during installtion of XP.

This Chkdsk as told by you , does not run on my computer because of the following reasons.

1. My harddisk does not have any corruption/errors.
2. I didnot scheduled it to run manually.
3. I have the entries in the registry (Session Manager ) but it did not run after an improper shutdown because it is not meant to run this way in Window XP, I Windows XP detects any corruption/errors on the harddisk during bootup this utility will run automatically then but not after an improper shutdown in Windows XP.

If this utility is running on your computer after an improper shutdown there is a possibility that you have some corruption / errors on your harddisk already.

You really have a bee in your bonnet about this, haven't you ? :):)
You and your friends don't have Chkdsk run automatically after an improper shutdown. I and my friends have it running. Neither of us is claiming anything from guesswork. So it's really a stalemate.

I've also asked outside my immediate circle of friends and they all say that they do have it run after an improper shutdown. I don't really have to visit the links you posted here. I'll take your word about the contents of those links. I'll visit them when I have more time.

But the evidence of Chkdsk auto-running is undeniably there, on computers that have no hard disk or software problems, and did not have prior installations of Win 9x.

Unless either of us or someone else can come up with an explanation for the difference in what we observe, it's really pointless to keep on arguing, isn't it ?

Well! Pimpom I am not arguing, I am just trying to figure out things and learn Windows XP's features. And I am not surprised to see that this chkdsk is why not running on my comp after and improper shutdown. And I have figured it out by talking to a Microsoft Support Personnel. This will never run on my or any others comp according to the Microsoft Support Personnel untill and unless we make it run. He said the program which actually runs is not chkdsk but autochk.exe instead. Microsoft removed support for ScanDisk in Windows XP since it contained some bugs which couldnot be fixed and it was not necessary to enclude it with Windows XP. Since Windows XP is not an improvement over its previous Operating System ( eg: Windows 98 ) according to him. Windows XP was completely re-written and hence it will not behave like its previous operating systems did. The entire algorithum for chkdsk.exe and autochk.exe was written a fresh. And this utility will not behave like the ScanDisk of Windows 98 in Windows XP according to Microsoft.

I hope since, u are using an Operating System of Microsoft you must believe what Microsoft says about its Operating System.

I have no intention of speaking with you anymore in this particular topic. Its hard to make you see things and understand. Don't be so adament about what you say. I guess you are not an Expert Support Personnel, but the person whome I had a talk with were an Expert Support Personnel, I had to burn my pocket to talk to him. I guess now u see things and understand dude. I am not against you and don't intend to , u are a good friend to me and to everyone in this forum. I am sorry if at all I had hurt you.
thanks.

Look, Tech&ME, I'm not angry or hurt (well, I was just a little bit offended when you effectively called me a liar earlier). Your circle and my circle have been observing two different modes of behaviour by Win XP. I don't disbelieve you and i never said that I don't believe you in what you said. And I appreciate the fact that you've gone to some lengths to figure it out.

If you'll recall my earlier posts, I was never particularly concerned about the name. But no matter what it's called and no matter what the Microsoft guy said, there IS some form of disk checking after an improper shutdown that all my friends and acquaintances often see. It runs before Windows is fully loaded, so there is no way I can grab a screenshot of it running.

I accept the fact that you don't have this disk check run, and you should also accept the fact that I have it. Until either of us finds out the reason, let's leave it at that and no hard feelings, eh ?
