what do you mean by "Laptop does not allow that" and what OS are you planning to install?

what upgrade you want in windows XP. Just download updates from Microsoft site. or, install SP2.

Or even you can wait for few months..and install SP3 for XP.

But AFAIK SP3 will require at least Sp1 installed. SP1 wont be available now easily, so installing SP2 for now would be better.Correct me if i am wrong

Hey, when did you purchased your laptop? I think all the newer one's (2006-2007 make) are coming with SP2 preinstalled. You can check it by right clicking on My Computer icon on desktop and clicking properties. On the left of the image of computer, Windows XP version information is given. If it says 'Service Pack 1', then you can go ahead and install Service Pack 2 available for free from Microsoft as well as previous issues of Digit. If it says Service Pack 2, there is nothing to update, wait for Service Pack 3 to come. If no service pack information is given, then too, get the Service Pack 2 from any of the above mentioned sources and install it, its necessary for next version.

By the Way, you got licensed windows XP with your laptop or your vendor installed it from a duplicate (pirated) cd? Please check that because if you dont have any service pack installed and you try to install SP1 or SP2, they wont install on the pirated version of windows XP. Please check that.

No you all are not getting me.
I have a dedicated partitioned drive where my xp is loaded and I don't want to format that drive and instead I want to install a newer version of xp(vista). But when I format my c: drive and put the vista bootable cd, it says put the original cd proved by the vendor.
The original cd given by the vendor is the one time copy of the original xp given in the d: drive.

what can I do to make the vista cd readable and installable?

its a brand new cd purchased of vista so plz help.
I think there is some link between the preloaded d: drive that does not allow any other bootable cd to read, except for the copied original disks.
