My mother yesterday purchased LG's 260 litre two door frost free model for 25.5k. GL-N292BRGY/2021. This has two star energy consumption rating but it only takes 248 units per year approx. There are convertible models that come with 3 star rating but those cost 3k-4k more. A two star rated fridge now is lot lot more efficient than the one from few years ago. My current fridge is 5 star rated (about 10 year old) but it consumes more power than this new LG one.

1) Yes, if you use an inverter at home. But most of the modern refrigerators come with inverter friendly compressor.
2) yes, it is. Again, most come with this feature.
3) Even 2 is okay. Do not go by rating alone. See the wattage given for 1 year. If you have to pay lot more for a higher star rated one, will you recover what you paid extra in 5-8 years time?
4) Buy at shop. You can check and if there is something wrong, you can directly deal with the salesman.
5) If you like, go for convertible models where you can change freezer into refrigerator with click of a button and convert it to freezer again whenever needed.

No,That is not how inverter compressor works, it has nothing to do with inverter at home.

compressor pulls out heat from food inside the fridge. But like during winters there is less work to be done compared to winters. Or rather simpler even during day, it is warmer in the Noon so requires more work during that time compared to night when there is less heat. The inverter(aka digital compressor) adjusts itself to use less energy during lower temps and work with higher efficiency.

Basically it adjusts inverter frequency acc. To requirement.

If you are talking about variable speed compressor, I was just stating that most new models comes with inverter friendly compressor. And it is due to this new compressor design that this year's 2-star models are lot more efficient than 5-star models from the past (that are powered by old style compressor). Just that I did not mansplain or use tech jargon.

assuming this is the answer to this point :-

Like I said, I kept it simple, replied in haste and did not start on 'what variable inverter is and whether is it good or not'. Also, salesmen in shops say that these new fridges are inverter friendly as well (as in fridge can run when home inverter is running on battery power). Do we even have refrigerators with conventional compressor now? Fine, if you want me to mansplain:

The Inverter technology (DC) is the latest evolution of technology concerning the electro motors of the compressors. An Inverter is used to control the speed of the compressor motor, so as to continuously regulate the temperature. The DC Inverter units have a variable-frequency drive that comprises an adjustable electrical inverter to control the speed of the electromotor, which means the compressor and the cooling / heating output. The drive converts the incoming AC current to DC and then through a modulation in an electrical inverter produces current of desired frequency. A microcontroller can sample each ambient air temperature and adjust accordingly the speed of the compressor. The inverter air conditioning units have increased efficiency in contraction to traditional air conditioners, extended life of their parts and the sharp fluctuations in the load are eliminated. This makes the inverter AC units quieter, with lower operating cost and with less broke downs. The inverter AC units might be more expensive than the constant speed air conditioners, but this is balanced by lower energy bills. The payback time is approximately two years depending on the usage.
