Buying an HD4870 512MB card.

Need a motherboard with the following (absolutely necessary):

1. PCI Express 16x v2.0 slot (has to be PCI Express 2.0)
2. Support for DDR3 1333MHz

Any cheap makes around?

Bump.

Seriously, no body knows?

I Always Prefer 1080p
Buy motherboards which have P45 Chipset.

This article should be useful : *www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-p45-motherboard,2001.htmlhttp://

1.MSI X48C Platinum (Both DDR3 and PCIe 2.0 support)for around 14000/-
2.ASUS P5K3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP(No details r there abt PCIe x16 2.0) - 14000/-
3.ASUS P5K645 WS (But no PCIe 2.0,4x PCIe x16 .. Quad PCI-E Support)- 14000/-
4.Intel DX38BT (Both DDR3 and PCIe 2.0 support)- 13500/-

I'd suggest u to go for first one and for Intel board.. But i dont think the intel boards are good for overclocking..
And also think abt 3rd one..a Quad PCI-E support.. You can pair four HD4850 and is there any game that cannot be playable at this one?????
Just mu opinion....

Thanks a ton for the suggestions Raj.

ASUS P5K645 WS? It won't support the HD4870's bandwith requirement, will it? I'm not sure. I'd rather be safe with a motherboard that has the PCIe 2.0 explicitly specified.

The MSI X48C is going to be it. Decided. Thanks. :)

think about this:

You are going to buy HD4870 and mobo worth 15k. That means you are going to spend say 35k in total.

Instead, get this:

1) ASUS P5Q Pro: Rs.8k-9k (*in.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=709&l4=0&model=2269&modelmenu=1)

Get HD4870 X2 (two 4870 chipsets on one board) and this is the fastest GPU on the planet right now.

Sapphire model is available for USD550 right now. Get the price of this card and it will be better if you configure your rig around this card instead of configuring around your mobo :)

^^Another nice suggestion desiibond. DDR3 is ****. Go for ASUS P5Q and HD4870x2 :). You will get 2x oerformance with this rather than wasting money on eXpensive mobos.

Checked out the P5Q PRO. Very impressive (DDR2 1200MHz support).

Thing is, I'm not sure if the HD4870 X2 is available yet. (Any clues there? If yes, please post.) And the reasons for going for the MSI (link) are:

  • 1. DDR3 at 1600MHz (I can get OCZ DDR3 2GB to clock at that)
  • 2. It does have two PCIe 2.0 slots (just like the P5Q), so I can crossfire a second HD4870 in the future (at least 6 more months, or my paycheck is done! lol)

What I'm trying to justify is if the extra 6000 bucks is worth the 400MHz FSB benefit. I think not, and I'm now really tempted to go for the P5Q. Thing is before that, I need to see if the 4870X2 is readily available now (in Mumbai or Chennai). I'm talking to some dealers I know.

Update: I checked THIS link, and am now worried about the tiny increments that DDR3 brings over DDR2. Does not seem worth it (at all!) for the kind of extra premium that one has to shell out!

^^lol HD4870x2 is out since loong.

I should have clarified. I know it's been out for long (I'm a regular at Guru3d and Legitreviews......) and I've gone through all the performance reviews all over the net.

What I meant to ask was if it's "readily available" in our markets here in India. I know the HD4870 is! When I look at some of the popular indian online IT stores, I see the X2 version is not listed, yet.

Therefore I asked the question.

It's a little bit difficult to get this card right now. ASUS P5Q would be your best bet for mobo. Yep. you don't have to shell out 6k-7k extra for tiny increments when you can get a powerful Graphics card or a better processor for that extra cash.
