I have encountered this problem twice with XP and everytime it occured I had to format my entire and install WinME, thanx to Knoppix Live CD that I could back up my movies, mp3 collection and tons of other data.
First my configuration :
Intel Celeron 1.1 Hz, i810 cipset, 128MB RAM WinXP Pro SP2.
Primary Master Drive : DVD, ATA 33
Primary Slave Drive : CD-RW, ATA 33
Secondary Master Drive : LRG, ATA 33, 4022MB
Secondary Slave Drive : NONE
The first it occured when I tried to install Ubuntu, during the installation some packages could not be copied because of bad installation media and so I aborted the installation. When I rebooted my PC I got 'missing the operating system' message.
I booted through Floppy and gave fdisk/mbr command but no use. I was able to enter and list all the drives except C drive where I was able to just enter whenever I typed dir it gave Abort, Retry Fail.
The second time was when I tried to create a swap partition from Knoppix using QTparted. I was successful and I was able to use the swap partition with Knoppix Live CD, however when I booted my PC I got 'missing the operating system' message. I used my XP bootable CD and formatted the entire Hard disk but during the installation of XP when the PC reboots and continues the install, my PC booted and again gives me the message 'missing the operating system'. However I noticed one thing, when my PC runs well during the POST I get the above mentioned Primary, Secondary, Master, Slave configuration but when the problem occured there is a problem in hardisk config
Secondary Master Drive : LRG, ATA 33, 4022MB --> When PC is well
Secondary Master Drive : CHS, ATA 33, 4022MB --> When prob occurs
I understand ATA 33 but what is LRG and CHS. I remember when the problem first occured it was solved only when CHS changed back to LRG (It was solved by PC mechanic). I formatted my entire disk but still CHS dose'nt change. I need urgent help
