Microsoft will lay off 18,000 employees over the next year of which 12,500 employees will be from Nokia's devices division, which the company took over earlier in the year. "We are moving now to start reducing the first 13,000 positions, and the vast majority of employees whose jobs will be eliminated will be notified over the next six month," says Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft.

According to Nadella's memo, most of the layoffs will be in "professional and factory positions". He promises that the 13,000 employees that company is eliminating will be notified in the next 6 months.
Severance packages to all the impacted employees will be offered.
He also hinted towards Microsoft moving away from Nokia's X line of Android powered smartphones. "We plan to shift select Nokia X product designs to become Lumia products running Windows. This builds on our success in the affordable smartphone space and aligns with our focus on Windows Universal Apps", he concluded.
