Laptop purchase suggestions - should support Ubuntu out of the box

2) What size notebook would you prefer?

15.6 inch preffered, 14 inch also acceptable

3) Which country will you buying this notebook?

India


4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
a. Like: thinkpad (lenovo) & dell but also open to other brands
b. Dislike: HP & compaq, Acer and sony


5) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
S/w developemnt and a bit of entertainment

6) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
would need to travel with it occasionally.

7) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
No high end gaming

8) How many hours of battery life do you need?
about 2 hours

9) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
buying online is OK

10) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
would primarily work on Ubuntu Linux. need to be sure of the driver issues with the graphics and network.

most of the current laptops work out of the box with most of the modern distros, this is not the 90's where you had to write your own drivers and assembly programs for wireless and sound to work :)

tho you will find some troubles with the special function keys, coz they are not standard.

how much are you going to game?

if not much, a simple 30-35k laptop will do, too

Right off the assembly line
I know most of the drivers work. Its the graphics drivers that worries me. Most of the laptops comes with the hybrid graphics cards and AFAIK that has issues with most of the distros of linux. The native drivers tend to use the higher end component of the hybrid graphis for all purposes, which drains out the battery juice and heats up the laptop.
