I think you are talking about Red Hat 9. The inbuilt xmms won't play MP3. Just download the latest xmms RPM from *www.xmms.org and it will start playing.

But if you are using RH9, its pretty old now. 3 more versions have come after that. So better upgrade. PCQ Linux 2005 is coming in March. Its based on Fedora Core 3 (Red Hat 12) So buy the mag and install it. Their cutomisation is good. :)

U dont have to upgrade ur os just to play multimedia files ...just update ur kernel..
TO play multimedia files install
1.xine library files
2.any xine ui (user interface)
3.Get the right codecs for all the format and keep it where xine searches for codecs ...

xmms is the WinAmp look-alike. So you will be more confortable with the interface. With other players, there could be a very small learning curve. If you don't mind that, try out xine and mplayer. They are good too. But to get you started, I would suggest use XMMS. You will feel at home ;)
