I'm imagining that your image is in the bitmap format - .bmp

To reduce size, you'll have to convert into some other format like JPEG(.jpeg, .jpg), GIF(.gif), PNG(.png), etc. A simple way of doing this is opening your image in Window's Paint Brush program(Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint) and save the image in any of the above given formats.

Or use this - Irfanview. To customize your image files.

Remember, reducing the size of an image always reduces its quality. So keep that in mind. :)

Also, reducing the resolution of the image will reduce the size of the file (but also reduce the quality of printouts). If you want to use the image for viewing on screen only, a resolution of 1024 x 768 is typically sufficient.

u may decrease the dpi resolution to reduce the size further but that too will degrade its quality

Only in bitmaps and similar formats will zipping reduce file size considerably. For jpegs, since they already use a compression algorithm to reduce file size when compared to bmps, there will be negligible reduction in file size while zipping.

A good alternative to try is wmf/emf format.

Save your image in JPG format using either Photoshop or Irfanview and set the save quality between 50% to 60%.

Save your image in PNG format if you are saving vector images or program screen capture.
