What do you mean by Compact file format ?? do you wish to rip and encode them to 700 MB xvid or divx (.avi) DVD RIPs ??

if yes, then you may use AutoGK for the purpose... gives a great result and its free, try here, *www.chotocheeta.com/2007/08/22/how-to-make-700-mb-or-14-gb-1-cd-or-2-cd-dvd-rip/

You can also try Nero Recode to convert them to mp4 files if you have any version of nero installed. It is faster than divx/xvid conversion.

no i am recording some files in dvd format but i want to store videos i recorded on dvds for later watching after editing the part i dont want.

also when watching on tv i can view them in vcd format also so i want them to store more videos on dvd in dvd or cd quality .

in short i want software to edit vob files and save them in vob or dat or avi (divx/xvid) . if i can put more on dvd without much loss in quality then also no problem.

Ok recording from tv is of DVD or VCD quality. maybe VCD quality

Home use I would say Software Ulead Video Studio or Pinnacle Studio ... :) even I guess our very own Windows Movie Maker too can do this job ??

SUPER is almost like a standard software. Its FREE too...and it runs on reliable progs like ffmpeg, mencoder etc...

I say just use the mp4 container with the H.264 codec, set your resolution to 352x288 (I'm guessing you have a CIF rez phone or PMP) and just drag and drop your files.

SUPER, along with access to my University VPN & Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion is the only reason I still have Windows on my laptop at all...

You can have MPEG-1 (VCD), MPEG-2 (DVD & SVCD) format and now a days many PVR's support Direct DivX recording. The format choice if yours.
