High performace laptop with SSD (preferably nvme) for 80k

My current laptop is Samsung NP550p5c-S02in. I am very happy with this one except for the slow hard drive. Its 5 years old and showing all signs of imminent failure (heating/stuck pixels). Unlucky that Samsung stopped laptops, else I would buy the latest version of this.

I am also considering ordering from amazon USA or ebay global if i get a deal

1) What is your budget? (INR or USD)
80,000 INR / 1250 USD

2) What size & weight consideration (if any) would you prefer?
  • Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen . Laptop would be traveling occasionally only. so weight no problem
3) What are the primary tasks you will be performing with this notebook?

I am a structural engineer and moderate gamer. I use laptop mainly for running structural engineering and drawing applications (ANSYS, Autocad, Matlab) and I multitask a lot.

I used to be an avid gamer. But now I only play occasionally when a major title is released. Like call of duty.

5) Any typical configuration in your mind you're eying for ?

Atleast 16GB ram required
I need an SSD atleast 256 GB. I would trade capacity for speed. So I would really love if I get an NVMe in this budget. If not I need a high performance SATA SSD atleast.

A decent discrete graphics card is required. Need not be top end.
I would also like i7 processor (optional).

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
No preference for brands. But would love onsite warranty if that's an option

6) Anything else you would like to say?
  • Screen resolution (full HD 1080p would be welcome but not obligatory)
  • Battery back up ( I use it plugged in most of the time. So no demands here)
  • Purchase place ( online in india or from amazon.com (USA) or other sites that ship to India )

Thanks for the quick reply. This laptop is good, but at 126,000 INR its out of my budget. Is there anything cheaper ?

Asking too much for a 80k budget laptop, maybe in USD you might find such a deal.
Get an 850 EVO 250 gb and use it, its a VFM fast non nvme ssd

I bought a MSI GL62M 7REX Gaming Laptop i5 imported from Singapore for 50k but it does not have warranty in India. The same laptop goes for 80k in India. If anything goes wrong, MSI charges for it's repairs.

Of course laptops only have 1 year warranty.

My dealer from whom I bought the above laptop sold another MSI GL62MVR 7RFX Gaming Laptop for 60k to a local Hyderabad guy 2 days back.

And he has another MSI GL62M 7REX i7 laptop for 55k with him.

Any specific reason why you want to spend $500 more just for NVMe drive when you can get this laptop with 1060 graphics card:

P.S.To notice the performance advantage of NVMe drive(over a good sata ssd) you need to have a very specific usage scenario hence I am asking.

Many gaming laptops have NVMe support now but getting a NVMe SSD isn't worth it. Better to buy a higher storage capacity SATA SSD. It is fast enough. Check this video for more info on how little is the difference between a SATA & NVMe SSD (start at 3:38):

Lenovo Y520 has i7, GTX1050Ti & 128GB NVMe SSD along with 1TB HDD for 105k.

If you can buy from USA, Acer Predator Helios 300 at $1050 is a great choice. If you want warranty to be applicable in India, get Dell Inspiron 7577(i7 model costs $1100) & transfer the warranty to India. I'm not sure if amazon ships those directly to India.

If buying in India, buy Asus FX553 (i7 model) or this Acer:
Acer Nitro 5 Core i7 7th Gen - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/Windows 10 Home/2 GB Graphics) AN515-51 Gaming Laptop Rs.67990 Price in India - Buy Acer Nitro 5 Core i7 7th Gen - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/Windows 10 Home/2 GB Graphics) AN515-51 Gaming Laptop Black Online - Acer : Flipkart.com

Both have similar specs except for lower VRAM in Acer. GTX 1050 is sufficient to run games for next 3-4 years (actually till PS4 & Xbox One supports latest games as their GPU is about 20% inferior to GTX 1050).

Hi, thanks for the reply. I lookd at the Acer Nitro Core 5 with 8th gen Processor here . Seems good. Do you have any opinion on this ? And as per your video, it says buy a notebook without NVMe SSD and buy one later. Do you know any laptop with an empty NVMe slot ?

Normally 2.5 inch SSDs or HDDs are given with any laptop and an empty NVME slot is given for future expansion.

If the laptops are priced above 1 lakh then NVME drives are given where as an HDD is provided along with. There is room for a 2nd NVME slot.

My gaming laptop came with an HDD and 1 empty NVME slot for future expansion.

NVMe is not slot,it is a specification. Most laptops come with M2 slot but those slots support sata ssd not NVMe ssd.I am not even sure any laptop in India comes with an extra M2 slot that supports NVMe & priced reasonably. Also NVMe ssd is not worth the extra price for most home users as its advantage is only noticeable in a very specific usage scenario not found on a typical laptop.

@bssunilreddy laptop is not found in India,it is imported from Singapore. That is why it has an extra M2 slot supporting NVMe at a "reasonable price" though without warranty support in India.

Yes, M.2 slot contains both NVME and SATA specification drives which can be used.

Mostly any laptop manufacturer gives an HDD or SSD and HDD or M.2 slot SATA drive.

Some high end laptops contain 2 to 3 M.2 slots + an HDD.

That video was a paid promotion, just use it to see the difference between performance of HDD, SATA SSD & NVMe SSD. Almost no one would recommend getting a NVMe SSD over a better CPU, GPU or higher capacity SSD as the NVMe speeds are overkill & won't be required for next 5 years at least for normal users. Due to marketing & all, people would think they need a NVMe SSD but they don't. Just get a good SATA SSD, like Samsung 850 evo & you are good to go for years to come.

That Nitro 5 Spin is good if you want a bit light laptop with touchscreen, otherwise there are better options.

For best performance, this is your best choice:
Dell Inspiron Core i7 7th Gen - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/Windows 10 Home/4 GB Graphics) 7567 Gaming Laptop Rs.91990 Price in India - Buy Dell Inspiron Core i7 7th Gen - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/Windows 10 Home/4 GB Graphics) 7567 Gaming Laptop Matt Black Online - Dell : Flipkart.com
It has i7 7700HQ + 1050Ti. Get a SSD later if you can't while buying it. It normally sells for 90k+

Or this if you absolutely need a SSD pre-installed:
Dell 5000 Core i7 7th Gen - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/128 GB SSD/Windows 10 Home/4 GB Graphics) 5577 Gaming Laptop Rs.80990 Price in India - Buy Dell 5000 Core i7 7th Gen - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/128 GB SSD/Windows 10 Home/4 GB Graphics) 5577 Gaming Laptop Black Online - Dell : Flipkart.com
It also has a i7 7700HQ but with GTX 1050 (same as Nitro 5 spin).

For your tasks, while rendering the CPU will be continuosly under high load. i7 8550U can't sustain its high performance for long as it is not meant for that. It's benchmarks are close to 7700HQ but for extended load operations, 7700HQ is still the better choice. Also Dell has much better after sales.
