help required with my iphone4

Hi guys..

One of my relative recently returned from Japan after 3 years.
He was using iphone4 in japan ( locked to a local network called : softbank ).
As of now, he'll be living here in india for the next few years. But he's unable to use the iphone ( for calling/messaging ) as its network locked.

Any idea on how i can help him to use it here ??
I did a google search on unlocking network locked phones & almost all of them suggested on paying for some unlocking service ( like $30-$50).

If its possible, pls suggest a way to solve this problem.

Don't unlock yourself take it to mobile repair shop they will unlock it for you.

i just asked some of my friends for shops that unlock the phones..they are quoting about 8000-10000 for unlocking !! O__O !! :O
Any reliable shops that can unlock the phone in Nagpur or Delhi/gurgaon ??

SoftBank locked iPhones are difficult and expensive to unlock. Check eBay.com for prices.
Don't expect AT&T type prices for unlocking.
No point going to any mobile repair shop. They won't be able to help.

Another option is to buy those hardware r-sim or xsim type of stuff.

i guess there's no reliable way to get it unlocked..
practically an ipod now.. :/

try this, nothing to risk here, but IMO it should be safe to unlock an iphone at home and the method above, i saw it in youtube comments but that was for a verizon phone, i dont know if it will work for softbank
