Hi friends,
I have HP laptop with preinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium. My hardware are competible with Windows8.I got an upgrade offer for just Rs.700.

My question is can I retain my windows7 and install windows8 on another partition (Dual boot) using upgrade downloaded iso(I already made dvd of it)? If I do then Windows8 registration is possible?

Please help

In the zone
you can make the downloaded iso to USB which will make installation faster...

just insert the dvd /usb and select boot from dvd/usb from boot options from bios setup...
when you load windows 8 setup select new installation/fresh installation (not upgrade )and choose to install over a different partition other than windows 7 ..have the product key windows sent you ready..you have to insert it during installation...

if you already dont know
you can backup and restore your windows license using *www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/Advanced-Tokens-Manager.shtml

this way you can avoid repeated activation requests...

1, make backup of Windows 7 C Drive - create a image/clone the partition.
use this for it - Free Disk Copy, Drive Clone, Disk Image freeware - EaseUS Disk Copy Home Edition.

2. If you DONT have another partition, then create one for Windows 8, 50GB as a minimum would be better, i'd suggest 100GB.

3 .follow this step by step tutorial - How To Clean Install Windows 8 (Part 1 of 2)

Need confirmation on this from other users: once you make clone of partition, you dont need the recovery partition, so during Windows 8 installation you can delete that partition.
Because, for me (XP & Vista days) Recovery partition would not let XP & Vista dual boot.

The Upgrade license is for upgrade only.

Yes clean install but only after you delete the present Win7 installation.

This upgrade is for that particular PC only against which the Win8 key is issued.

So the Win7 is illegal as per legal MS terms the moment you activate the Windows 8 copy

I'm running Win7 & Win8 in dual boot.
so, yes, you can dual boot, but once you use win8 for a week, you dont want to go back to win7 ;)

I am not saying that he can't dual boot. I am saying that if he would do it then it would be illegal as per Microsoft Terms and conditions and he has upgraded to Win 8 by paying and haven't bought a new license of Win 8 so basically he can use only one OS legally thats all. Period.

But ultimately he is using two OSes simultaneously but he paid for only a single one so it is illegal. :)

Well as per EULA yes. Rest is the users choice. There is no check/constraint by the OS and/or installer which will deter this. Nor is there any software limitation for this.
