Gaming Laptop Help

Right off the assembly line
Hi all,

Am new to the forums.

I've been researching for a while now and trying to narrow down on a good gaming laptop for myself but am well and truly confused at this point.

I started off with the intentions of buying a desktop for gaming. However, before I could, my current laptop crashed so decided that since I need a laptop, I may as well get one for gaming as well.

With the desktop, I started off with a budget of 50K. I thought that'll be enough to get a pretty decent machine for gaming.

Ideally, I'd still like to keep my budget at 50K tops. But I do realise that I may not be able to get a really good machine for that amount. So I may be able to extend my budget to about 70K but I'd have to get that with finance options.

I'm not really good when it comes to figuring out configurations but from what little I know, I was hoping for the following:

RAM - 4 GB minimum (will be awesome if it's expandable to 12 GB which I may do later. Atleast expanable to 8 GB bare minimum though).
Graphics Card - 2 GB minimum
Processor Speed - 2.3 ghz or above
HDD Space - 500 GB is more than enough. (I have a 1 TB and 500 GB external hard drive if I need space).
Don't need Windows. Already have a Windows 7 genuine copy.

I've browsed through the forum. I've checked online. I've researched some amount. But like I said, I'm thoroughly confused.

My basic need is for surfing, some movies and ofcourse, gaming. I'm not a very heavy-duty gamer. Just like to unwind at the end of the day and although I usually end up playing Football Manager (I know it doesn't require particularly high config), if I have a system which can enable me to play games like Batman: Arkham City, Crysis and Battlefield, I definitely would love to give them a shot.

From what I've looked around for, these seems nice to me but then I really don't know:

Acer Aspire V3-571G Laptop (2nd Gen Ci5/ 4GB/ 500GB/ Win7 HB/ 2GB Graph) (NX.RZLSI.003): Flipkart.com: Compare, Review Acer Notebook

Asus K55VM-SX086D Laptop (3rd Gen Ci7/ 8GB/ 1TB/ DOS/ 2GB Graph): Flipkart.com: Compare, Review Asus Notebook

Samsung Series 5 NP550P5C-S02IN 3rd Gen Ci7/8GB/1TB/2GB Graphics/Win 7 HP: Flipkart.com: Compare, Review Samsung Notebook

I would really appreciate if someone could advise me.

Thanks a lot.

Ashwin.

why do you need 12 gb ram? for your case, 4 gb is more than enough.
50k for a gaming laptop is not enough. you'll have to compromise somewhere.

from your 3 links, the last (samsung) looks promising, as it has a 3rd gen i7 and a gt650M.
steer clear of the acer, its got sucky specs and a sucky keyboard.

contact a local supplier, dont go with FK, and ask for a non-Windows unit, it'll save you ~4-5k. if possible, ask for a smaller, faster HDD, like 500GB with 7200 RPM.

BUY A NOTEBOOK COOLER, IT'LL HELP PUT OUT THE FIRES

dont just go with "gaming" laptop.... find a laptop, look at its specs, and them decide if its good or not.
here is the sample specs :
RAM :4-8 gb ram DDR3
CPU : core i7/i5 (make sure that its something like 3xxx, where the 'x' are numbers)
preferred series : 35xx, 36xx, 37xx. dont look for anything less, unless the price is 3-4k cheaper.
GPU : follow this : Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart : Best Graphics Cards For The Money: September 2012
look for the "Go" or "Mobility" sign next to the card name, coz this list has mixed desktop + laptop cards.... so this helps in separating them.
preferred : 640M, 650M, 550M, 555M, etc.

dont compromise on cpu or gpu, as these will be the deciding factors in a good laptop. (also, you cant change a cpu/gpu, better get the best you can afford, the other items are easily replaced/changed)

Thanks a lot, doomgiver. Really appreciate the advise.

I've had a look around online some more and these are the ones I've found:

Dell Inspiron 15R Turbo laptop | Dell India

HP Pavilion DV6-7010 Laptop (3rd Gen Ci7/ 6GB/ 640GB/ Win7 HP/ 2GB Graph): Flipkart.com: Compare, Review HP Notebook

and the one I had mentioned earlier which you thought was pretty decent:

Samsung Series 5 NP550P5C-S02IN 3rd Gen Ci7/8GB/1TB/2GB Graphics/Win 7 HP: Flipkart.com: Compare, Review Samsung Notebook

Out of these, I'm leaning towards the Dell for now as its giving me a little more I guess. However, I donot know if the AMD Radeon™ HD 7730M DDR3 2GB - ICC that Dell is offering is better than the NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M (2 GB DDR3 dedicated) that the HP is offering or the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M that the Samsung is offering.

Please do advise on your recommendation. I checked on the link you've given me. The Radeon is listed around mid-way but the other two aren't there. Would appreciate if you can advise me between these.

I'm gonna go down to Nehru Place over the next few days and check out some laptops with the tips you've given. But atleast, thanks to you I've got a starting point.

Really appreciate the help.

Regards,

Ashwin
