Welcome To The Jungle
I have recently got an Antec Sonata, it comes with a front panel usb, firewire and audio connections. i just cannot make out which connector is for usb and which one is for firewire (1394). pls help me to differentiate between the two. i want to connect the front usb as i dont have firewire in the mobo. my mobo manual says dont connect the 1394 to usb as it will damage the mobo. i want to see my front panel working. pls help.

other specs are:
asus a8n-e mobo, amd 3500+, 512x2 ddr 400, nvidia 7600gs pci e card, lg dvd rw, western digital sata II 300gb.

Sonata Chassis comes with its manual, you can refer it. However for your easy to find the right cables, just see the cables which must be of this colors attached together. -- Red/White/Green/Black -- moreover, you will see two bunch of this type of color coded cables tied together and this are the USB cables. Similar cable of this kind also comes out of the front of the chassis but those are single cable and is a FireWire cable.

Clearly : USB has to cables which are tided together and are color coded.

FireWire has a single cable which are color coded.

Hope this helps

i have gone thru the sonata manual but it didnt help much. the two connectors which came out of the front panel is identical, no difference @ all.

in that case you have two options left, either u can post photos of these wires or try to open the front panel of the cabinet, u will find small screws on the side (inside cabinet).

The end of the cable to the front panel should already be connected when you buy the cabinet and you need only connect the other end to the Mobo. This end should be marked as USB in white paint. I have not seen the Sonata case but I am telling from the experience of Antec Performance TX 1050B which I bought last week.

I wonder why it is not labelled in your case. In my case each and every cable was labelled and it was only a matter of minutes to connect them all despite my eyesight being not that good!

I think you should go for Papa_mcc's method, trial and error. I mean, don't force the cables in but gently push a USB cable into either of the ports and see. My guess is that they are both USB and there's no Firewire....

Sonata does have Fire wire in the front. See the specifications -

yes sonata has a firewire port in front. in my case i was unlucky with the labelling parts. there are lots of instances where the enclosure has come without badge and other stuffs also. u have to write to antec and they will send u across. trial n error method doesnt go here.

Yes, I am also of the opinion that in such cases, trial and error is not the method of choice.

Two days back, I happened to open my cabinet (1050B) to fit a Vantec 92mm fan and checked the Firewire cable, remembering your querry and to my horror, the cable is missing, even though the port is there in the front. I had not checked it when I changed to the new cabinet recently because my A8N-E does'nt have Firewire. But now I plan to buy a firewire card. I hope Antec will supply the cable if I request. And I paid Rs.8500/- for the Cab+PSU.

Yes mine is also Antec and recently bought.
In your case the cables were not labelled but in my case, all the cables are labelled but the firewire cable is missing. I am also going to write to them.

which enclosure do u have n how much did u pay 4 it? write to them and they will send u the necessary stuff. anyway we both can't use the firewire as the mobo doesnt support.

As I had mentioned earlier, it is Antec TX 1050B with SP 500 PSU for Rs.8500/-. I doubt the price was too much.
Yes, I want to buy a firewire card but dont know whether it will have provision for front panel connection.
BTW someone pl suggest a good FW card with app price.
