Simple maths here.. Manufacturers calculate 1GB as 1000MB and 1MB as 1000KB and 1KB as 1000B.
Computer calculates the same as 1024 B or KB or MB.

SO 250GB = 250000 MB = 250000000 KB = 250000000000 B in your HDD
Computer sees that as 250000000000 B/ 1024 / 1024 /1024 = 232 GB

:D

Yup! For Manufacturers 1GB = 1000MB whereas Computer calculates it as 1GB = 1024MB..

The Entire MB/MiB/mb/etc. Notations are very confusing.. This Comic may help you understand a little :-\

You didn't lose anything. Every geek knows these calculations and every 250GB HDD in the market has 232 GB of space. that's normal. its just that you didn't know it previously
