I re-assembled my old computer a few days back. It is working fine but the explorer (taskbar, start menu, desktop) is not loading. I've to load it manually from task manager every time I start the compter. it uses windows xp.
everything else is fine and it doesn't have a cd/dvd drive. for both these reasons I don't want to reinstall windows. what could e the problem?

Had a same problem once with vista due to using a crack , go for a genuine version with the original Cd. Or reinstall the OS. GENUINE USERS DON'T FACE THIS PROBLEM

Good one. But if you read my question properly, its an old computer which I might use just for playing some music or downloading stuff with night unlimited connection (which I don't have yet). I can't afford to buy a multi user license for such a pc. I should have been able to use one xp cd with 2 computers, afterall I don't need to take multiple electricity connections for separate rooms, then why software?

Linux all the way
how about adding explorer.exe to scheduled tasks, each time you boot your PC.
may be that can solve your problem, though never encountered sucj prob.

exlporer does start but does not work unless I end the process and restart it by typing explorer.exe or userinit.exe. I added userinit.exe in startup but that also did not work.
Anyways, now that I've plugged the smps of that PC into some other PC, i won't be using that any more. so thanks for helping.
