Hi
I have a domain hosted under www.somehosting.com. They are telling me that I cannot create a subdomain with the name mail.mydomain.com. Do every hosting impose this restriction or only this particular host wants to cheat me providing such fact??

If I am not wrong, there exists mial folder for mails. i don;t think you can change it. You can see that mail folder in the document root of your website.

thats cos mail.somedomain.com will be configured (in the DNS) to be either the webmail page or the mail server name (in hosting control panels like Cpanel)

if its configured as the mail server then you probably have webmail.somedomain.com as the webmail page..

when i tried to create the mail.mydomain.com it throws the following error

Error from domain wrapper: Domain already exists, it was not added.: mail.mydomain.net

what should i do? should i go with alternate name like webmail.mydomain.com.

cant we have the one as same as mail.google.com, mail.yahoo.com, etc for our sites?

If your host don't permit...You cant.

generally mail.domainname.com is used as mail server for pop3 and SMTP setting.

mail.domainame.com is set as default mail server for all domain name if server is set as so.

Mine also, also server have mail.domainname.com set to mail server, and all my hosted domain name gets mail.domainname.com as mail server.
try to open
mail.techiehost.org
mail.whostz.info
mail.whost.in

All will open some default page, or homepage.
