Cannot play games

I cannot play games such as gta vice city and blue shift. either the game starts and the screen goes blank when i try to return to the desktop or the game fails to start at all. what could be the reason for this?
this is my system config:
3.06 ghz proceesor
1 gb ram
nvedia 6200 turocache Tm
gigabyte motherboard

Try updating GTA Vice City to v1.1 .

have you Installed any third party Codec Pack(s).

I had similar problem b'coz of a codec pack (whenever i Alt+Tab out, the game would crash).
