Can u use identical graphics card model from different makers in SLI mode?

Guys can u tell me if I wanna run two graphics cards in SLI mode then I understand the 2 graphics cards have to be identical but do they have to be from the same manufacturer?Further,does it make any sense to run two 8600GT cards in SLI mode?

You don't need same manufacturer cards anymore

And no, it doesn't makes sence unless you have lots of money to spare.
