1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run?
Ans: Hardcore programming = processing power must be high. I shall run Java IDE, Databases, App and Web Server + 10 other apps running simultaneously.
Basically processing power should be good.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 40k (can extend upto 45k max)

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: No

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Win 7 64-bit

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 500 GB or 1 TB (if budget permits)

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: Need a 24" or bigger monitor for programming ease. Also a high resolution would be better so that many things fit into the screen properly.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: Don't want to buy : Speakers

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: In a month's time.

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: By an assembler.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Live in Pune. I can buy it online, if required. All options open.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans:
A comfortable keyboard + wireless mouse.
Also I would be more interested in running Intel processors for they are better for processing intensive tasks.
Enough RAM to make my work swift.
The more the connectivity options, the better.

Basically I want a processing powerhouse under a tight budget. :(

The Phenom II has extreme processing power and if you are lucky it may unlock to a hexa core so double value for money, its 50-50.

Thanx for the link vineet.

Right off the assembly line
@Tonmoyfx - Thanks for the thread. I had similar requirements in my mind. Not a gaming PC but a developer's one.

@Vineet09 & @Utkarsh - I saw the performance comparison for the two CPUs you recommended here:
AMD Phenom II X4 960T vs Intel Core i5-2320
I believe, the Intel i5 is worth the 2.5k more.

Do you have other recommendation to choose from?

@panwala95 - Do you still believe that 2 GB RAM is sufficient for running servers + database + IDE + tools in parallel? Please don't take it otherwise, I want to understand how important is it to decide budget for RAMs.

@all - I'm also looking for a similar machine. Apart from what Tonmoyfx will be doing, I want to do some Adobe Photoshop + basic video editing. Is this configuration safe for future upgrades if I want to advance editing in Photoshop or video editors?

@getzafar21
You're welcome. Btw, even I think that i5 would be a better deal. Talking about RAM, they are always getting cheaper by the day. So as long as you've free slots, you can always upgrade them later. But even I agree that 4 GB should be minimum for programming tasks etc. You can later go for 8/16 if required.

On second thoughts, I think I'll settle for a 20 inch screen. Which one would you recommend, guys?

Why is everyone suggesti GFX for OP's rig? HD4000 should be fine for coding. IMO that might be better as he gets more processing power. Also get 2x RAM's for dual memory channels.

* Intel i5-3550 -- 13.5k
* H77 motherboard (which?) -- ~5-7k
* G.skill 2*4GB DDR3 ripjaws RAM -- 3.5k
* WDC Blue 500GB HDD -- 3.8k
* Asus DRW 24B5ST -- 1k
* Corsair CX-500v2 -- 3.3k
* NZXT Source Elite 210 -- 2.5k
* MS Wired 600 combo -- 0.7k
* 600VA UPS -- 1.5k
* Benq 24 inch LCD - G2420HD Monitor: Flipkart.com ------- 9k
Total ---- 44.5k

Will that not do? If gaming capabilities are required later, a discrete GFX will fit in nicely.

Hi guys,

Thank you so much for the recommendations. It helped me shortlist a config (shared below). Can you kindly suggest if it's good enough or I get get some components better in the same price range.

Also I won't be playing games (as of now), so not interested in investing in a costly graphics card. I want a decent entry level one that just does the job. Can you please help me by suggesting one?

Config:

Processor --> Intel 3 GHz LGA 1155 Core i5-2320 Processor --> 11024 (or Intel 3.3 GHz FCLGA1155 Core i5 3550 Processor --> 13691)

Motherboard --> Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H Motherboard --> 4632 (or Gigabyte GA-H77-DS3H Motherboard --> 6890)

Cabinet --> NZXT Source Elite 210 --> 2500(where can i buy it from? Online? Local retailer?(Pune))

RAM --> Corsair DDR3 4 GB (1 x 4 GB) PC RAM (CMV4GX3M1A1333C9) --> 1337

Graphics Card --> ?? -->

HDD --> WDC Blue 500GB HDD --> 3962

Optical drive --> Asus DRW-24B5ST Internal Optical Drive --> 1111

Monitor --> Dell 20 inch LED - IN2030M Monitor --> 7000

PSU --> Corsair CX-500v2 --> 3300 (where can i buy it from? Online? Local retailer?(Pune))

Mouse --> Logitech M235 Wireless Mouse --> 975 (Can you suggest a good combo. I'm not very comfortable with small mouse. Wired mouse will also do)
Keyboard --> Logitech K120 USB 2.0 Keyboard --> 500

UPS --> ?? --> 1500

Speakers --> Creative SBS A335 2.1 Multimedia Speakers --> 1803
-----------------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL --> --> --> --> --> --> --> --> --> --> --> 39644

How good (or bad) is the integrated graphics card in Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H Motherboard?

You're absolutely correct. I don't want to invest in GFX now. But I wonder if the inbuilt card is sufficient for watching multimedia even?
Btw, do you suggest i5 3550 instead of 2320?

Ok, here is the deal, I was kinda wrong...the i5 3550 only has a HD2000 which is just about enough to play back 1080p movies smoothly. Do not expect any gaming though. The i5 will certainly be much better at multi-threaded tasks and multitasking. If you do want slightly better graphics however (or absolutely never ever want a discrete one), go with the Ivy Bridge processors which have HD4000. They aren't very far off each other but at least the newer ones supports more than just dx9.

You can always buy a cheap GFX later for cheap thrills gaming. I doubt you will have much problems with the HD2000 or HD4000 for either flash videos or 1080p movies. Let me look for a few links to verify that statement. Gah, this slow Internet connection :/
