hi, i am looking for a laptop too ,within the same range of 55k-60k,after 2 weeks of research this is what i have learned.
My basic spec was
fast processor (AMD/Intel does't matter)
fast RAM (DDR2 533mhz is good)
Harddisk 40gb+
good graphics card
DVD read is must
will compromise with battery back-up
weight no bar, size no bar
don't need wi-fi/bluetooth , just plain-simple 10/100 LAN.
for a budget range of 55k-60k the following companies are strictly out of bounds (if u r buying in India)
Sony - tooo expensive
Toshiba - '' ''
Dell - expensive if bought in india
Samsung - there is an economy model within this range but it is not good enough, the good models are too expensive
Now for the laptops which are avilable in this range
Zenith - not powerful enough fr gaming
ACI - not powerful enough,low quality,bad service
Gigabyte - there is a good model (N411) but i do't think you would want to blow ur 60k on a company which is an unknown name in laptop market
that leaves two companies
1.
HP-Compaq : they have a really wide range on laptop models in this range, but fr gaming two catogeries are suitable
Compaq Presario V2000 series - good all-round multimedia capabilities with , though the fully loaded variants may exceed 60k
HP nx120 series - Corporate laptops but with enough punch for gaming
HP nx130 series : ( with Raedon x700 agp with dedicated 64MB VRAM) the dealer i contacted said that they will be avilable in india in November.

2.
Acer :
Acer is really good value for money especially if ur a student.
there are several acer models which will fit in as gaming laptops and fortumnately they are not too expensive either
Please remember that almost all Acer laptops in this range come with 256mb ram only , it cost extra Rs 3000 to make it 512Mb which is a minimum now-a-days for gaming.
1. Acer Aspire 5002 : AMD Turion 64 (64bit cpu ) ,RAM : 333mhz fsb
people told me that the performance is great but the battery backup very poor (around 1.5 hours when playing movies)

2. Acer TravelMate 4601 : (this is the one i am going to buy, so maybe i am a bit prejudiced)
Intel Pentium M 730 (1.6Ghz,533Mhz fsb),DDR2 RAM (533Mhz)
and Dig this!!!
